Brian's 7mm Diesel Workbench, Belated up-date!

Recommended Posts

Hi Dave,

I have updated my thread on the Class 40 here http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php/topic/5464-ressaldars-o-gauge-modelling/page__gopid__44489

suffice it to say that I think that it is the lack of height between the bogie swivel plate and the underside of the main chassis that is the problem and hopefully, it will be cured with the actions taken today.

regards

Mike

Thanks for that Andy. Wonder what there stuff is like?

Found this site with 1:48th scale tanks but when you click on the picture there are no more pictures to see only little red X. ASAM Models

The "Hospital Gates" layout uses the Gramodels Nissen hut and it looks pretty good. Rippers gives some details of it on the old RMweb : Gramodels Nissen Hut. Might be worth dropping him a message to see what the castings are like.

It's been a while since I updated the Warflat build so here goes. I finished building them a few weeks ago but have been at the mercy of the cold weather as I like to spray the primer outside as with an aerosol can the stuff goes everywhere. For these I bought a can of Pete Watermans etch primer. It has gone on ok and you can't scratch it off but boy was it thin to spray. Our concrete path was covered in the stuff! Then I painted the bodies with Precision Paints MoD Green. Well that's what it said on the tin but as you can see it's more like MoD Mud. Looking at the pic of the real Warflat there are 3 different greens on the 2 vehicles and the wagon but none like the Precision Paint on the model. I will have to go into the model shop and have a look through the paint racks for anything that takes my fancy. By the way I did google MoD green and it came up with Deep Bronze Green? Is that a standard Land Rover colour?

Hi Brian

Great looking class 26 and warflats. Deep bronze green is a Land Rover colour which military Land Rovers carried when they were first built and left the factory. Once the vehicle went to it's regiment, the vehicle was repainted. When you go and look for paint try looking for nato green or cammo green. This is more of a matt finish and not gloss like bronze green.

Mr Daniels

Many shades of green adorned these over the years ... not just 3!

A few minutes on my spreadsheet for the KFA warflats show KFA MODA95255 and 95257 [there may be more] have/had a similar colour to the 'MOD mud' you describe applied to them in the recent past. These also have/had a mixture of white and yellow lettering. I'll dig out a pic or two if it would help.

Cheers

Hi Mark

Just had a close look at my KFA pics and there are a couple that do look similer to this shade of green. Do you think these are still in the 1976 paint as built? Whether it's right or not I want my KFA's in a nice shade of dark green. As you say the lettering is a cream colour on these. The transfers I have from Appleby are the yellow colour so I really need a darker green.

Seems to me that the answer is the usual response ... copy one of your pics. :) There are a maze of variations in the paint and lettering on these and I do not yet have enough information to answer your question as to paint date. The latest and commonest variation with all yellow lettering [and more of it than previously] seems to date from 2005 [as in my pic of 95245] but if you were ask the same one on MHA Coalfish I am embarrassed to say I could tell you which had lettering that varied from the 'standard' styles. :(

If you can't find a pic of yours that matches the Appleby sheet then feel free to PM me a scan so that I can match it to a prototype.

Regards

Mark

Got some transfers on the first Warflat today. The transfers that Appleby do do not have all the lettering that apears on these wagons unfortunatly so we are short of a bit. It was a right mare cutting out the Handbrake On/Off white transfers from a very light blue/white backing sheetsad.gif . These transfers are not like Fox where each transfer is individual. These are all one on the sheet so you have to cut round each one as close as possible to it reduce the backing showing.

By the way it is painted in Railmatch GWR Green! Looks ok to mesmile.gif

Appleby transfers date back to the last century IIRC. They would have been correct at the time but the lettering has multiplied in quantity, particularly in the last 7/8 years. The current style [as in my pic] is almost exclusively limited to those that have been painted more recently in the 'brighter' greens with yellow headstocks and jacks. This would explain the 'release handbrake both ends' being commonly seen in white and therefore a later addition [2000 onwards] to those wagons still carrying the more sparse yellow lettering supplied in the 1990s Appleby set.

Thanks for sharing your handy work with us. I am quite inspired with this O gauge stuff - I use the word quite because if I admitted I was very inspired I would end up spending silly amounts of money on O gauge kits!. Besides, I have lots of OO gauge stuff and would find it difficult to part with it all if I was to switch gauges! I'm not sure wifey would let me do both... Maybe I will just lob everything I have OO-wise into a model shop that stocks O gauge kits and trade it all in!

On your website, I see you have some pics of PCA centre depressed tanks. Who produce those kits, are they metal and are they easy to build?

Sorry for the delay in replying Alex, only just seen your post what with the forum doing a good impression of Tommy Cooper, now you see it now you don't, ha ha ha, just like thatlaugh.gif.

The PCA's are ready to run Skytrex with a little bit of extra detail painting and Fox transfers on them. They do seem a tad too high but in a rake look ok.

I have finished one of the Warflats now. Need to do the metal L strip down the wood sides on the other 3 now.

I have been busy since crimble making a couple of JLTRT 26's. One will be 26012 and I am still unsure about the plowed oneblink.gif One thing I had to do on the 26/0 was to remove the cab radio pod that was cast on it. The 26/1 also has one of these cast on the roof but I am sure the only ones to have these were the ones that also carried headlights? I am pretty sure I will have to remove it on the 26/1 later. The pictures below show the different bogie details on a 26/0 and a 26/1. JLTRT supplied the 26/0 with 2 battery boxes, one with a X on the front and the other plain, so if you want one of these make sure you can see what one the loco you are modelling had. There are still a couple of little jobs to do on both of them but they will both be running double headed tomorrow at the Boure End running session.

Whilst I am painting 26012 at the moment I have finished building an ASAM 1/48th Fox light armoured vehicle to go on the Warflats. I have ordered a few more vehicles to go on these Warflats which should look nice I think if this ones anything to go by. Mind you they are going to be a bit heavy with 2 vehicles per wagon. Definatly a Heljan diagram to move them I think!

Tamiya only produce two 1:48th scale model vehicles and sadly they are both of the American army Hummvee you could just get away with using them as our troops do use them in Iraq and Afghanistan but the question is would you want too?

Are there others besides Tamiya? I ask because my lad used to produce dioramas with Tamiya stuff and it was exquisite.

I'm with you on this one Alcazar,

The 48th Tamiya range is quite superb across the board and far superior in quality to any multi-media military vehicle kits that are currently available in 48th [as opposed to 76th & 35th - the other popular Military vehicle modelling scales].

I have the little 48th Tamiya WW2 Austin Tilley kit - it is quite faultless and one of the very best kits in any scale of any subject, military or railway, that I have ever seen. The problem is that there is no British modern stuff in their 48th range as yet - though I'm sure that might change in due course. Some FV432/4s, light tanks or Pingauzers would make really excellent loads for Warflats & Warwells.

It does seem like ASAM are the only people that make O Scale modern British Military vehicles from what I have found. I have attached a few of their demo model pics that are suitable for an MoD train. Just waiting for Appleby to do the Warwell to get a Warrior and Bedford truck on.

the vehicle look good as a starter for ten but I think the "dinky toy" ( CVR(T)) is a Belgium 90mm vehicle. If you use the FV430 Ambulance you can update the vehicle and wack dome ex chieftain hull stowage boxes on the sides then add a big silver scape aling them where they are out of guage.

They will look good on your Warflats - and make a nice long train behind a 66

As well as weathering my Heljan 20 I did 20009 at the same time. So I now have a pair of Toton JLTRT 20's finished that are DC only. I am going to do 20029 with a token recess to go with my 20052 later to give me a pair with DCC and sound in both. 26012 has also been painted and varnished. I will leave the windows out until I have weathered it in a few weeks time. I do like that green 20, but it's the only green loco I will do, honestsmile.gif

I finally got round to weathering my DJH skinhead 31418 whilst I was in the mood for weathering 20's. I think it's one of the nicest diesel kits available, it just looks spot on. I see I started this thred off with pictures of this loco painted in October last year. Didn't realize I took that long to weather itblush.gif
