Brian's 7mm Diesel Workbench, Belated up-date!

Recommended Posts

Nice model, I look forward to it covered in snow...that would stop you worrying about detail round the bogies.

On a slight sidetrack, how does the numbering system work? What's with the single digit after the three digits?

Yes, bring on the snow! Might have a while to wait at the moment.

The number at the end of the loco number is a computer check digit Jeff. If say you wrote down 1020 018 with a 7 at the end the computer would say no. They get at the end number by a code using the other numbers but I forget what it is at the moment.

I think you're right, the font is a little bit squashed at the sides. If you do keep the number, 1020.018 was the original E94 001, which ended up in Austria at the end of the war and finished its days in service around 1990 at Villach.

What a gorgeous model, makes you wonder why we bother with our British stuff!!

John.

IIRC you multiply alternate number by 2, add the total and subtract from the next higher multiple of 10. So in the example of 1020 018 you have:

(2*1+0*1+2*2+0*1+0*2+1*1+2*8 ) = (2+0+4+0+0+1+16) =23. Subtract from 30 =7.

I think I am worried that I remembered this...............

Edit to remove the unwanted emoticon that appeared when I tried to type 8) (or 8 followed by a )!

If its any consolation, I first thought you multiplied by 1 then 2 on each alternate number, but this also gives 7 which is wrong!

I think the answer is that you class the 1 and 6 of 16 (the 2x8) as separate integers, the sum is then 14, which taken from 20 is 6, as in 1020 018-6.

Applying this method to 1020 029-3 and 1020 031-9 in the photos above also gives the correct answer.

Phew!!!

I think we might all have been watching too much Countdown.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just been loading the scrap at EMR in Swindon and noticed their little 0-6-0 shunter is a bit of a cut down one now.

Before:-

And now

The "wirewool" on top is used to clean their roadways with, it's not part of the shunter!

I don't think I put up these pictures of the Heljan Western that I raised the headcode up a bit and added JLTRT brake shoes on here before.

This has been niggling me a bit recently, to paint the belly blue or not and leave it black? Well blue won so I sprayed blue over the black and varnished it. I have now weathered it and yes, you can't see that much blue, but I know it's there!

I have also weathered the BG and that 6 axle 80 ton warwell, pictures to follow.

I am not doing the roof blue! Even for me that would be toooooo much blue. Now that I have weathered it the ends look a lot better with just filth on them. Pictures to follow in a couple of days, playing trains tomorrow. I have to take some pictures of the BG as there is a little something I have done to it to show you later.

Whilst at Railex on Saturday I caved in to buying a Judith Edge 0-6-0 Sentinel kit. I would like to build this as any industrial that I like, no prototype to follow, just do it to what I fancy. I will make a livery up as well and might even name it BRIAN  :blum:  I would like to put lights and sound in it as well. When it gets built though is anyone's guess though!

Here are some pictures of the Westdale car carrier and my JLTRT BG now that they are weathered.

I also added some lights in the BG by glueing some PCB to the bogie bolster and using some flat phospher bronze strip for pick-ups resting on the top of all the wheels. It worked ok round the layout with no flickering! The lights are just wired straight to the track so they are on all the time on DCC. This BG is a bit of an experiment as I have used the following to illuminate it to see what I like best.

16V Miniatronics bulb.

Now which is the more realistic? I might add lights to all my JLTRT MKI's if I can decide on the best looking "glow"
