Exhibiting stopped over six months ago, standing on concrete for 8 hours was not fun. Sitting down would be OK but surely all exhibits need to be at 'optimum' viewing height of 1,2m - what if we change things to make it more comfy? The other issue is the supporting legs and space inside the adapted (blue badge) vehicle - why not try a cameo that sits on the storage boxes (covered by some cloth) that sit on the supplied table - that free up a lot of space in the auto?  Chris Nevard manages with a similar concept......

A MSM 'layout in a box' diorama module will fit inside the rear load space with storage boxes - mobility equipment on the rear seats.

Now the subject matter, a lineside track maintenance depot because we have quite a few engineering wagons and a SEF G6 (Meldon DS682). Loco+wagon moving around with another three wagons in sidings to make life interesting, it might sound boring but most of time at shows will be blathering to the audience. Lots of industrial structures are available, just need to find the right one.

Possibly using two code75 medium turnouts with bullhead plain track and no 'off scene, just a building as a view blocker? Mechanical Bluepoint turnout control, easy DC control with a 'wallwart' for mains power and LED lighting.

You want to get hold of some SR bogie ballast hoppers. Those plate bogies and the heavy loads carried ensured they needed more than their fair share of TLC ;)

I had better mention this guy Floris Dilz his inspirational work is well known by industrial modellers on mainland Europe.

Well worth 'Googling' his name and looking at his work

Hi,

Last night, I received a severe ear pounding, the thought of yet another Quarry based layout was not well received - moreover the concept would require the purchase of another loco.

A subject, far closer to home was suggested as being far more suitable and capable of raising interest in our local area. Moreover, no further stock purchases are necessary and we have a couple of internal user vehicles that need an excuse to be used.

Both the SEF G6 30274 and our resident Jinty will be useful.

We had better start another thread, sorry folks.

Jack

Hi Jack,

Have just started work on DS682 using your (almost complete!) SEF G6 kit and chassis kit. Motor and gearbox (60:1) on order from Branchlines. I have received all the missing parts from Dave at SEF.

Hi Jack,

Motor and gearbox assembled. Using M10/20 motor and Branchlines /Romford RU 60:1 gearbox. May fit the flywheel if it will fit - should give a more realistic shunting action. All runs well on test assembly.

Chassis now finished and ready for painting.

Added enhanced firebox/grate assembly. This loco will be fitted with insulated wheels all around so it will need pick-ups on both sides. I will try pick-ups on the top of the wheels which should be easier to achieve with a tank engine. Moving collectors above the wheels also makes fitting brake gear a lot easier. I don't claim originality having read on this site of a fellow modeller that has used wheel top collectors.

Jack,

Update on progress. Frame painted:

Re, the prototype. The more you look the more you see. So far all the illustrations of the G6 class in BR days had an extended front bufferbeam with different fixing arrangements, bolts rather than rivets at the front only. Certainly this includes DS 682.

Honest I am not a rivet counter!

Oh, can you please order some Alan Gibson LSWR Sprung buffers (Part Ref 4910) since those supplied are wrong with square rather than round buffer bases.

Kind regards,

Jack,

Should be able to fit in flywheel. Nickel Silver crossmembers soldered to whitemetal footplate to secure body to chassis. 555791908_IMG_4962(2).JPG.009d5111f5592cf5aad6f485a296fdb7.JPG

Looking forward to Railwells this weekend, should be good.

Kind regards,

Hi,

It would seem that the change from Meldon to Templecombe was premature, the offer of a USA tank and the stock cupboard full of various ballast wagons suggest otherwise, just as long as the diorama does not morph into yet another quarry.

Instead, something more along the lines of Chris Nevard's micros seems more appropriate with only a background image hinting at the location.

Background image

The lovely Scenecraft wooden loco shed, suitably coloured SR cream/green will be in one corner facing the wagon repair workshop with the remaining sidings for crippled and freshly repaired wagons.

Fresh out of the shop

The only question is turnout operation - remote mechanical or electro-mechanical - the former is preferred as this diorama must be simple. This looks good click here  and cheaper than Bluepoint.

Thanks to RMweb, this will be used as the loco shed, once suitably painted, that just leaves the wagon repair workshop to source. The Marcroft workshop is suitable inspiration.

Hi Jack,

Body of G6 is now complete - cab roof fitted temporarily and buffers will be fitted after painting.

Chassis has brake gear and sandboxes just requires injector pipes, sand pipes unless I discover something else that's missing.

2082771234_IMG_4980(2).JPG.255b7e579f39e096de610ad243cb02d2.JPG1661101114_IMG_4982(2).JPG.6b84caffe965cf525259c54c1804c807.JPG

Not a bad little loco and it should pull well enough.

Kind regards,

Richard

PS Some compromises around cab entrance and footsteps in relation to trailing wheel but not much I can do about that.

Jack,

Pleased to say :D  that apart from buffers, that will be fitted after painting, the G6 is now finished. A few final pictures before painting.
