Hi, I've been planning an Avonside 0-4-0st for a layout of mine, and I cannot find any drawings that describe it. However, there is a very similar locomotive, Trojan, which looks like it may be either a sister class following the same rough dimensions, or indeed a member of the same class. There are some dimensional discrepancies, such as the length of the running plate beyond the cylinders, and, of course, the saddle tank. Other than that, they appear to be incredibly similar, almost identical. I'm almost comfortable with using these plans and modifying the tank. Does anyone know if they are of the same design, or, perhaps, if there are drawings of this class in a book I could buy?

This is my first post here so I am sorry if I broke any etiquette.

I believe that it is an Avonside SS class.  There is one at Foxfield - works no. 1563 ex Hodbarrow.  These are lovely little locos well worth modelling.  You don't say what scale - if it's 7mm Ragsdale Models http://www.ragstonemodels.co.uk/agenoria.html do the ex Agenoria kit for an SS.  Welcome to RMWeb and best of luck with your project.

That's good to see.

Do you think the 3rd image is of the same class? Or something different?

I have a CSP Trojan and a friend of mine has the old Centre Models version of Trojan, but put them side by side and you'd think one was in 4mm scale and the other was in 3.5, so different is their size.  It made me wonder if one of them was actually of a close relative of the SS Class (of which Trojan is a member) but researching the subject at the time revealed that the SS Class does not have that close a relative.  I'd say, therefore, that the upper Avonside in your pictures is also an SS.  My guess is that the original customer specified a higher tank capacity than was supplied on the "standard" model.  It could also be an earlier/later version of the SS, resulting in the front end of the frames being a slightly different shape.

With regard to the CSP kit, it is indeed derived from the original Agenoria kit.  The body remains pure Agenoria but the chassis was redesigned during the scaling-down process and is not as good as the original 7mm scale version.  It doesnt help that when the chassis was redesigned, the instructions were merely altered, rather than given the complete revamp that was merited.

There is a thread on an older incarnation of RMweb about the quirks and foibles of the kit.

Thanks for helping me out with that. I'm going to have a couple different avonside/industrial locos but unfortunately, there are very few that have kits made for them and in terms of information, it's hard to figure out what's what. Even more confusing is that many industrial customers ordered their models to a customized design, no one 0-4-0st seems to be the same.

Try looking for 'Desmond' , a little 0-4-0 Avonside that used to reside for a while at Caerphilly railway Society. It used to work at Orb Steelworks, Newport, and is still in one piece, but its current location escapes me. It was last steamed in the late 1970's, being  driven by the late Pete Rich at Caerphilly.
