Johndc120
Based just south of Gloucester Elmore is a terminus station with 2 exits, the main heading back towards Gloucester and a branchline which feeds the outer industrial areas of Gloucester and the small villages in the surrounding area. The Design includes a 2 platform station with a main platform and short bay which is for the branchline passenger trains, a small goods yard and a section of double track on exiting to allow trains to pass the next incoming train before exiting to the F/Y. This probably wouldn't be prototypical but will allow us to keep the layout busy at all times for exhibitions. This is the design of the layout

Johndc120
Progress made on some of the signals today. the photos are of the platform starter with elevated ground disc, the branch home with equal routes into either platform and the advanced starter with the main route for the mainline and reduced for the branch line 4
Johndc120
It may not look like much but after several months designing and planning we’ve finally started cutting timber for the baseboards. This is all of the softwood blocks which are used in the ply sandwich and risers to support the track bed (166 blocks in total) 2
David C
Looks as though it will be an interesting project. The signals looks good - but as one who hasn't progressed beyond the Dapol ones, that'snot that much of a compliment!!! I assume this is an exhibition layout. If the squares on the plan are 1 foot, then your scenic section must be 16 foot length plus fiddle yard. I look forward to seeing progress. Regards David C

Regards David C Thanks David, Yes it’s designed as an exhibition layout so although it might be a branch line terminus, the double track on entry allows us to keep the layout busy at all times. Not prototypical but people don’t like to see a layout with nothing going on. Spot on size wise, it’s 16’ x 2’ with a 5’ Cassette F/Y John

Johndc120
Tonight we’ve cut all of the plywood for the layout, so we now have 5 complete kits to build the 5 baseboards.
Johndc120
Assembling the ply sandwich. all of the sides have been made as they are easy. We’re now assembling the ends and the inner web, these are all individual as they support the baseboard and the heights change with gradients 1 1
Johndc120
The final parts of the baseboards have been assembled, this means we can finally start putting it together!
RMweb Gold jamest Posted August 29, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 29, 2019 (edited) Looks good. I'm amazed you are so organised you can incorporate the track support while producing the baseboard pieces. If only I could be that focused when planning and building - mine tends to be more a gradually evolving concept!! regards, James Edited August 29, 2019 by jamest 2
Johndc120
Thanks James, yeah there’s a far bit of planning that goes into the baseboards before we even cut anything. These are the plans for board 1 which is the station end, probably the easiest as it’s all flat so all the risers are the same heights. We’ve done a fair bit of testing on the layout already with full size print outs so hopefully a lot of evolution was done then. I’ve already started on the brass signals so there’ll be no major changes now!! And these are the webs for board 1 Regards John 1
Popular Post Johndc120
As well as building the boards, work continues on the bridge, I’ve now got it together including a deck, I’ve discovered a few locos including the Hornby 61xx are a bit wide to gauge so I’ve had to open up the bridge by 2mm per track to allow for the cylinders 12
Johndc120
After the success of the plasticard mock ups for the bridge deck. I’ve spent the morning designing the finished deck. It’s to the same dimensions however it has the correct corrugated section from underneath Thanks to a Pete Williams who uploaded this photo of the real bridge in long melford. It’s helped a lot to understand the design of the deck without having to dive to the other side of the country

Johndc120
A very successful night on the baseboard again. Tonight we’ve fitted alignment dowels and Tnuts. The outside Tnuts are only on one board and are bolting the layout together when set up, the set beneath the dowels are for bolting on the transport plates 1

Johndc120
First prints done of the deck and test fitted. Really happy with how it’s turned out. It’s likely not to 100% correct but at least it’s a good representation 3

Johndc120
From a kit of parts to complete baseboards. Last night we had a very successful night. After several weeks of prep work to produce baseboard kits, we’ve finally put them together. This is the all of the ends and internal webs for the layout Construction started on the outer frames of the first board Board 1 completed, it takes 20 minutes to assemble each board and they are complete with all of the risers for the track bed, joining dowels and bolts to assemble them together 1 1
Johndc120
Boards 2, 3, 4 and the F/Y all completed. once completed we couldn’t resist assembling it to have a look at it for the first time. It’s hard to imagine it unless your familiar with the track plan but after building 2 8’ shunting puzzles we really love the length of run on this layout
RMweb Gold Joseph_Pestell Posted October 1, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2019 Can I ask the source of those metal brackets that are holding the diagonal piece on the legs? Getting the legs nice and rigid is one of the areas that I struggle with.
