Which might be good in as much as he will possibly argue to continue, but really the decision to continue / change / cancel is the privilege of the PM.

As for the majority, 320 votes are required after taking account those who don't sit, and those who can't (speaker, etc).

Conservatives currently have 322 (with DUP), but that is expected to decrease to 321 with the Aug 1st by-election.

They also have an MP in legal trouble who could theoretically be forced out sometime in the future.

I’m not sure that any locomotive would deserve that treatment.   Nor would any DMU or EMU.

As an alternative, how about naming the most beaten up decrepit piece of freight stock that’s languishing forgotten and unloved on some part of the network somewhere?

Hmm.. his wiki reads a bit undesirable.

Though of course he does meet the qualification criteria of having absolutely no prior knowledge of the ministerial position he is given.

Judging by the numbers high-tailing it to the back benches of their own volition (presumably to be as far away from the fan as possible when the brown stuff hits it), plus the ones Boris has sacked himself, the new PM won't exactly be inundated with candidates experienced in any field.

Shapps has a reputation (justified or not) for doing business under several pseudonyms. The Daily Mash even took the mickey out of him for this.....

Sounds like a splendid compatriot for Boris.

The change that worries me is at the treasury. Hammond may have had zero charisma but he was highly competent and capable and in a quietly unspectacular way managed to keep financial wheels on the track in very difficult times. If I had anything good to say about his replacement I would say it.

7 out of the 21 cabinet members and 8 out of the 31 cabinet attendees are women.

Several years ago Grayling was the first senior Tory to openly admit that the way privatisation was done was fatally flawed and so when he was appointed there was hope he would do some good.  The only explanation I can offer about what happened subsequently is that the civil service rapidly totally subsumed and house trained him.  He certainly sounded like a well trained Whitehall parrot long before the end.

I met, in professional capacity, with Grant Shapps when he was Opposition spokesman to DCLG. Yes, he is a "smooth" politician, but he is very capable. Could be a very good choice at Transport. Won't be afraid to shake things up.

Shapps was succeeded on energy matters by Greg Clark. Sorry to see him leave Govt. A really good guy.

But, above all, what we are seeing here is a more fractured political system where people are either "in" or "out", based on personal patronage rather than competence. That can not be a good thing.

Could some sad minded individual bestow Mr Grayling's monika on some unfortunate locomotive?

Hopefully they won't disfigure any rolling stock by doing that . . .

In fairness, if ever there was a man who was an expert at fatally flawed privatisations...
