SteelAndSoot
there we go Of course it is not a replica of the original railway however it is my interpretation of the line.
SteelAndSoot
oh yeah and my ruston arrived. plus I am repainting Big Bertha into midland red (as shown on a stamp) either way it is still a work in progress
SteelAndSoot
Alright.... So..... News In a couple weeks I am going to be ripping up my model railway and starting again. I just need to wait a couple weeks for track to arrive. I can't explain the full plan but I can list of some of the features. 1. double track running round in a loop. 2. entire layout will be lifted up about 15 to 20cm to allow for the railway to cross over bridges and run on embankments with a dockside (sea level will be baseboard height). 3. properly done castle and a castle like bridge (a bridge with the same style of the castle) 4. hopefully two stations 5. a rather large township. a more industrial area (either a factory or a more likely a flower mill like is seen on the site of dunster castle) with a detached siding serving it (with a small bridge before the short line reaches the building) 6. big cast iron Victorian bridge. 7. white cliffs (probably a short tunnel running through it) 8. goods yard 9. engine sheds (potentially a separate shed serving a industrial line in one of the corners 10. small seaside area now it is just waiting for the rest of my track to arrive
SteelAndSoot
My track arrived and I managed to get my hands on some foam to build up my layout not much to say as the picture shows it all. here is a link to the first loco running on it

SteelAndSoot
I have finished the paper mache for the banks. I now need to coat the banks in plaster of paris and finish work on the bridges
SteelAndSoot
I finished plastering, painting and applying bricks to the bridges. I am not to worried about the size of the bricks or anything like that as this layout isn't meant to be realistic
SteelAndSoot
I got all the grass down. Now I have just got to add the other vegetation
SteelAndSoot
got some other stuff to share first of all we have a youtube channel Miscouted Rivets https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZfFCCzOv1QQnDlfn50JMPQ secondly I have made some more progress on my layout (will post later) and thirdly I have recently decided to start on a project I wanted to start a while ago. I had wanted to do a 009 trench layout however the prices where to high for me and I dropped it. However I decided to look into the idea some more and decided that I could get HOe locos or build my own engines. Therefor I decided to make a start, I have bought a black minitrains brigadelok ( couldn't get any other colour) and I have built my first loco for the british trenches (I shall put it in the next post)
SteelAndSoot
so as for the Loco I have built, it has no historical basis and I just pulled the idea out of thin air. it is a 0-6-0st, no real life basis and was just a 3d printed bodyshell I had from a previous project to make Edward Thomas from the Talyllyn railway and a chassis from an N scale 0-6-0 (I do not know the brand) I didn't really have a plan beforehand, I just looked at some pictures of real life locos and started building (making it up as I go along) It is just luck that the chassis fit perfectly (I just had to cut a couple holes)
SteelAndSoot
a bit of stuff gathered together
SteelAndSoot
it was at this point I realised that the lack of planning was not going well. the loco was to tall so I took of a load of weight by chopping it in half with a dremmel (the cut removed enough material that I could just put it back together) however this made the cab roof to low and the crew couldn't fit. so I cut away some bits under the cab to lower the cab floor, this meant I had to remake the rear buffers. after a bit of fiddling I ended up with this
SteelAndSoot
at this point I wasn't quite happy with it as it seemed a bit boring and it didn't look right. so I cut a giant hole in the back of the cab, drilled some holes in the buffer beams and put the couplings on I then stuck a (unpainted) crew inside and this is as far as I have gotten. I know quite a few people would want more details no how it was made and my thought process, but honestly, I just sat down with a dremel and some sanding sticks and got stuck in and things just kinda happened
SteelAndSoot
its not finished yet as I plan on adding some other stuff (weathering, coal and possibly a hose) but at the minute I will leave it at this point
SteelAndSoot
as with all my stuff, its not the best but I am happy with it
SteelAndSoot
my only explanation for it being on the western front is that it was commandeered from an industrial railway
SteelAndSoot
A random rail tractor I decided to work on the tractor portion is an oxford model and the chassis is a highly shortened 4 wheel wagon and here it is after some gloss
SteelAndSoot
A fantasy model I made
SteelAndSoot
I made this for two reasons 1. cause I like fantasy 2. to test different weathering and strange techniques as can hopefully be seen, the dragon is curled around the pillar now this is very obviously heavily based on tolkiens works
SteelAndSoot
I also added another engine to my colliery collection it is by no means well painted however my colliery fleet is designed to be something fun to mess around with it has no received a gloss coat so it is no longer a boring matt colour
SteelAndSoot
I decided to paint the crew for my WW1 trench loco
SteelAndSoot
the crew in place
SteelAndSoot
Heres the loco with all the weathering and parts added It is on a mini prototype of what the trench layout it going to look (testing mud effects and scenery) I wanted to have the ground to be chalky soil like this image shows
SteelAndSoot
I roughly laid out how I plan the layout to look. it is heavily inspired by many things. some of which being the final scenes of the movie 1917, SDJR7F88s WW1 trench layout, images I have found online and (for whatever reason) scenes from the movie A Bridge To Far most of this layout will be amongst thick bushes and trees
SteelAndSoot
Here are some quick sketches I threw together of how I intend it to look (missing a lot of vegetation) I also finished a tank to go on the layout I found a very interesting image online of a MK IV Male that had been undergoing repair when it was captured by the germans. And there is an image of a couple german soldiers messing about on this tank. The tank had its guns removed for whatever reason and I found it a very interesting way for it to be shown. My dad built this tank for me ages ago when I first started getting into models. the model had become bleached, broken and worn overtime and had lost its guns a long time ago. I decided it would be fitting for such a model to become the centerpiece on the layout with a group of people surrounding some sort of fire next to it whilst the repairs go on
