‘Spur of the Moment’ BNSF in 1/29 scale

I’ve relapsed into an old interest, I had the SD40-2 and GP38-2 in BNSF H1 previously ;) I bought this at a very reasonable price and I’m hoping to modernise it to BNSF patch livery.

So far I haven’t found any 1/29 scale decals for it but does anyone know if there are any large scale patch sets? (I can’t even find an O gauge version). I’m finding suitable photos I can use to create my own if not.

I’m also looking for good detail of the cab top AC units for this and the GP38’s.

So far I’ve found this which looks similar to the SD one

and these for the GP38 although they may be too small so I might build my own and cast them. I’ve found at least two different styles on the same loco at different times.

Oops I did it again . .  .  :diablo_mini:

A GP38-2 in the Swoosh livery was too good to refuse so I got it and started detailing it. I had a spare plough so as they don’t come with one that’s been added and I’ve moved the horn back to the cowling and the aircon unit is coming along.

Large scale decals are usually produced to order, as far as I know Microscale no longer produce large scale decals.

Custom Decals  produce traditional waterslide decals https://www.cedarleafcustomdecals.com/Sample_Pagesx.html

G-Scale Graphics produce vinyl decals   https://www.gscalegraphics.net

Both suppliers are helpful and provide a reasonable service.

Tut tut Paul, what next:

or going for the modern stuff:

;) The chap I got the SD40-2 from had one of those but my pedantic side meant I went for the blue version ;) I’m surprised at you Keith, only 3 stacks!!!! :)

The SD will be modernised with patch decals and as you can see the GP is being tweaked too. This will be the full extent of the fleet for a ‘little’ shunting plank with sound hopefully.

I used to have the H1 BNSF SD40, Gp38 plus Warbonnet F3's and a dash-9 a few years ago but they went to finance RhB and HSB stuff ;)

The project trundles on with two wagons weathered this week. They still need kadee couplers but they are starting to look the part.

it’s just washes of Tamiya acrylics, couple of browns, couple of greys and black.

Next wagon is a big smooth sided hopper, still drying at present but I’m trying for a lighter effect as there’s not many places on the side that collect moisture. Just trying to make it look well weathered by sun and dust as it’s the older livery. Couplings are on the list ;)

This is the minimal shunting plank I'm considering, fold flat buildings and just basic ground cover with no permanent backscene although I am thinking of a photo backscene for taking pictures. Only thing is I have loads of spare LGB track but it's hardly lightweight industrial spur size, so is it worth handbuilding it for such occasional use?! ;) I'm intrinsically lazy with track as it bores me solid making it!

You MUST hand-build your track!! At that scale, think of how realisticly "bad" you'll be able to make it!! Like mine, but just so much worse!! Or is that better? Better/worse - oh you know what I mean!! Like the simple plan, too.

Hmmmmm I hate building track but like you said it makes sense! I need to find some suitable flat bottom rail and preferably pre milled point blades, that’s a hell of a lot of filing!!

I tend to use a belt sander for filing my Code 250 point blades.

Yes but it’s flat bottom rail so I need to cut into the stock rails too. I’m looking at the Peco G, pseudo fb track, as I could just resleeper the points and build the plain track.
I think I’ll build the boards and test it with the LGB set track on bare boards and then build the track once it’s been tweaked :)

Yeah I no longer have one and no room for one, I could mill them but I think stripping the parts from a Peco point is easier and it’s got the right geometry straight off.

No. You don’t.

On the real railway, the point blades are cut to fit into the web. Cutting into the stock rails would introduce weakness right where rigidity and strength are needed.

This sort of shape:

If Andy Reichert can have them produced for code 40 rail, you should have no trouble with something 6 times as big.

Have a look at Andy’s proto:87 stores for more information.
