Adverts in posts

Recommended Posts

Just seeing the new page format with the ads on the right.

I'm on a 17.3 inch laptop using windows 10, and the ads take up one third of the screen width, reducing the posts size considerably. Most of the ad area is a blank white strip though which seems like an awful waste of your screen area.

I've also got an ad at the bottom of the page, which I would prefer …. i.e. the top ad bottom ad format.

Seems a tad too squashed up now. I can appreciate the need for ads on this type of free to use forum, but hopefully you could "tweak" them to be less obtrusive.

Cheers for the great forum !!

The Ads are still there, but at the bottom of the page so at the moment the pages SEAM to be loading faster, but this could simply be because the top of the page loads first and the Ads then carry on loading in the background so by the time you scroll down through the page they have loaded.

Nothing in life is free ( I have a free bus pass, so I dont pay, BUT somebody has to pay for, and run the bus !)  So why not get pro active ? If you dont want Ads pay for Gold to support the site, If you dont want to or cant afford, then at the end of a session, if you like this current format with unobtrusive Ads at the bottom, click on a few Adds that you are ok with :read:  The back room boys will get the best numbers on a format that most like, Google will get thier 'click throughs' and hopefully target you with more relevant Ads based on those you choose ?

And as a bonus AYs hair might grow back !

Just a thought :drinks:

The ads have started appearing down the right hand side though there are blanks. Speed is faster at the moment , BUT when the advert bar is fully populated will it still be?

Again just for info, the bar on the right hand side of the screen containing the status updates, blog summaries etc. has now become very narrow, taking up maybe about 15% of the screen only. The rest of the screen is now occupied by widened thread links etc.

The Ads appearing full screen width, interleaved vertically with the full screen width posts. Personally, feel this is ideal. It's directly analogous to the way print media work, horizontal page turn, vertical post advance.

Possible extension, a screen of small ads 'hanging' at the ends of threads in appropriate sections. Motors and mechanism suppliers in 'Motors and Drives',  specialist detailing parts suppliers in 'Modifying and Detailing RTR stock' and so on.

Yeah, much better than having the right hand third of the screen taken up by ads and/or blank space. The huge one I'm getting at the top of the menu pages is a bit intrusive though, and sometimes a larger version of the small horizontal one right above it at the top of the page - so the whole screen is just advert.

Sshhh, it's a Gold thing. ;)

So, if we all went Gold, there would be no visible adverts for anyone, so Google/whomever would stop.

How about a Silver membership, where for a smaller fee there are no ads, but also no electronic mags.

Steve and I are discussing various possibilities but what have you got against having the mag? ;)

Maybe he's like me.

I only have one subscription (Steam Raiway) and I only have that because it come with the bank account.

At other times I buy mags as and when there is something that interests me, I don't want a years subscription to any particular one.

In each 12 months period I will have bought odd copies of several different railway themed mags, (Modern railways, Rail, Hornby Mag, Railway Modeller, BRM and others) possibly as many  as 20 or so but probably no more than 3 or 4 of each.

I wouldn't want 12 months of any particular one as often there  is little that interests me.

OK; so how much would you think is reasonable to contribute to access to the site without adverts?

Feel free to equate it to how many hours usage you get per month etc.

You can vary the effect by adjusting the width of your browser. There is a sweet spot where the posts occupy the full width of the window, and the extra stuff drops to the bottom of the page.

I would be grateful if you could advise on how this might be accomplished, please!

Nothing against any of the mags, but as Melmerby said I pick and choose which to buy depending on the content.

Good question, but also how does one balance the contributions made vs the enjoyment & information gained?  The forum is nothing without it's content.

As the adblocker is switched off for RMWeb, I'm expecting adverts.

I didn't say I wanted it without, just that maybe Stubby47 is like me and doesn't want a regular mag.

(Maybe he's willing to pay for ad free access without a mag.)

As long as the adsdon't overwhelm it like some sites which become unusable.

(Or a particular "free" phone app that downloaded ads intrusively into documents.*)

* I hope you don't go down that path.:nono:
