These are slightly OT, but I took some pictures of the ICI site at Gathurst a few years ago to see if anything remained of the NG network. There wasn't much left, but you could see where the sidings led to the buildings where the explosives were stored?? Also I found a few bits of scrap rail hiding in some of the undergrowth.

Gathurst Roburite/ICI/Orica Eastwood closed in 1981, so just makes the topic.  Here is one of John Phillips shots from 1978.

Nice photo, I've seen that before somewhere. I like the armchair and cuppa outside, and the stuff lying around makes a really nice scene.

Morfa Bank Sidings, Hywel's excellent model set in Port Talbot at the beginning of the 70s.

.

This was the original incarnation.

.

The layout has been modified of late, and I was privileged to visit recently.

I think Gathurst would make a great model, and should be easily done in a reasonable space.

Hi There,

Indeed it would make a great model but it would be quite a lot longer than you might think for the platforms are staggered by almost the whole of their length. I looked at it years ago ad it works out approximately 26' in OO gauge from the bridge that the photograph is taken from to the far end of the Southport bound platforms.

Here's another one to keep you going.  Ryburgh on 11th October 1980

Thanks for the great photos of Ryburgh. Is that the same location known as Fakenham as I've previously posted some picture from there and I've noticed that's the name of the road that crosses the line. Also I've found another one on Flickr.

Ryburgh was the station for Great Ryburgh and Fakenham was further along towards Wells.  It had been hoped to run the special all the way to Fakenham but the line had been closed earlier in 1980 and it was considered that the track was not in good enough condition to permit a passenger train to pass over it.  The other thing to remember about Fakenham is that it once had two stations, GER and M&GN.

Oh right, so that means that there were three quaint station goods yard just in one small area!

Looks like the wagons are unloading direct to the lorries, not a storage silo? In which case, a nice way to have extra traffic without additional infrastructure.

I remember a BR publicity shot of a Presflo being unloaded into a road tanker, with assistance from a small compressor. That was in the early days, though; did vehicles like those Scamells have their own compressors?

I would be surprised,  reason being a spare tyre is visible where a compressor would be, the other side would be on the other side.

Those are Fodens (well, ERFs) but they may have, the Scammell Routeman 8 wheel was a very popular chassis for the same use and I remember seeing some of those on the M25 contracts in Herts discharging into what looked to be a mobile plant with no other infrastructure nearby.

There is often a mechanism immediately behind the cab on the powder tanks but for some commodities (including cement) these were hydraulics for tipping the load.  A quick google of images appears to (broadly) suggest no tubes on the side indicates a tipper, tubes  on the side indicates a vacuum or air discharge and possibly air/vacuum and tip.

A different type of tank on a ERF chassis shows blown loading/discharge equipment fitted:

Foden S21 Blue Circle banana tanker 3

a newer example of discharge into a bigger trailer with little or no extra infra is here:

Scuse my ignorance but how would they be unloaded into the lorries? Looks like a good way to include cement wagons on your layout without needing all the buildings.

Hi sb,

The Presflo would be pressurised and once the required pressure is reached the air pressure will force the powder through the discharge valves once opened.

Certain designs of powder discharge arrangements have an air supply to agitate the powder to assist it in entering the discharge pipework to prevent cavitation over the valve although I don't actually know if Presflos used this arrangement or not. It is possible that the air would permeate the cement by enough of a degree to allow the flow of air to take the powder with it once the discharge valve is opened.

Certain types of receptacles are placed under vacuum to assist flow dependent on types of facilities used. Again I don't know that the road tankers would be placed under vacuum prior to loading from a Presflo but it is possible.

The compressors may be housed within a small building with an air main and flexible hoses to connect the Presflo to the supply or even just a portable compressor similar to those that provide air to pneumatic air tools at road works.

For modelling purposes the bare minimum would be a siding, a Presflo, a road tanker, a compressor and a hose. The deluxe version would swap the compressor for a hut and an extra pipe.

You could do a version of it by staggering the platforms the other way; making much better use of the space.

Really need one of these in N for the cement terminal on City Basin Goods
