AberdeenBill
Hi all, I refer you to the following accident report on the Railways Archive site: https://www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/documents/MoT_Hellifield1955.pdf On the track-plan, signal 43 (Hellifield South Junction down distant colour light) has an 'extra' Aux Y (presumably auxiliary yellow?) aspect. What is/was the purpose of this? Many thanks, Bill
Mark Saunders
It appears to be behaving as an outer distant for the North Junction distant under No 41inner home. A single yellow would take you to No 42 outer home but a double would show the distant under No41 was off. Mark Saunders
Grovenor
Signal 43 was a normal distant cleared if 42 and 41 were off, it had no link with the North Junction distant. These early LMS distants predated the use of double filament lamps and had a variety of means of protecting against filament failure in the yellow aspect. The auxiliary yellow would come on if the normal yellow failed, it had no other function, the signal could not display a double yellow. LNERGE
There is a circuit diagram in one of the IRSE green books. I still can't believe 41 is allowed to exist as it is in this day and age.
Grovenor
That accident was 1955, are you saying it is still the same? (Apart from the changes mentioned in the report).
AberdeenBill
41 has lost its distant arm but gained a miniature arm for the good loop and the North box is long gone...
