Last Sunday (18th August), the East Anglian Transport Museum hosted a "road traffic accident", with the demonstration by the emergency services based in Lowestoft. So in case anyone would like to represent a RTA on their layout, here are some photos of the demo.

The car is riding high at the front because it has no engine.

To begin with, the driver of the Land Rover ran off and was duly arrested. Then a medic climbed into the back of the car to support the head and neck of the car driver before the fire brigade set to work on the bodywork. First they opened and cut off the tailgate. Then tried to open the driver's door, which was of course "jammed" so this had to be prised open. They cut across the width of windscreen, then cut the A pillars. Wrapped plastic film onto the glass, then cut the C and B pillars and lifted the roof away. They took the driver out through the back of the car but this doesn't show up very well in the photos.

Afterwards, the car was put back together so to speak. It is still useful to the fire brigade, they can set fire to it to practice putting out a vehicle fire.

I know the amount of detail needed depends on the scale of the layout but maybe this will be useful to someone one day. I suppose, on a model, you could bring in the air ambulance too :-)

This was part of the "999" day at the EATM, a really good day out with plenty of other emergency vehicles to see as well as the usual trams and trolley buses.

I've taken my season ticket for the EATM down from the kitchen notice board, I realised it expired yesterday.  Last summer was a different life.
