Popular Post brylonscamel
After a few late sessions - at least two ended at 3am! - the new engine shed made it to my Dad's layout 'Braeside'. I've plonked it in the space vacated by my previous effort (made a few years ago and a bit metcalfe-y) 40 + hand made windows, 8 x chimney ventilators, 2 x clerestory roofs, 5 x round wall ventilators, a water tower and god knows how many roof tiles later ... The view from the rear, with the columns of windows, wall ventilators and roof chimneys This one shows it plonked in the vacated space, so there's plenty of work to clean the baseboard tops, prepare a proper base for the model and add the surface textures, water cranes, pits and debris, oil barrels and all sorts of 'paraphernalia' I never experienced a steam shed in mainline operation so it's all down to photos culled online or from books! hayfield
Chris The model is quite superb, my sparse memories were at the end of steam engine sheds were dark damp oily places Happy Christmas Edited December 25, 2019 by hayfield
Popular Post brylonscamel
A quick post to update progress with my Dad's layout 'Braeside'. I met my Christmas promise to Dad, delivering the shed on Christmas eve - just in the nick of time. Here are a couple of photos whilst we try and fit the thing into it's new home. Some fettling and adjustments to be done but the whole scene is taking a 'distinctly Caledonian' shape .. oh and the water cranes are a temporary detail just to check position - Dad bought some platform cranes by mistake!

The only taste I had was a couple of weeks as volunteer on the mid-Hants helping with the preparation of steam locos and have never been so filthy in my life! A close second was finding myself under a lath & plaster ceiling when it collapsed. Both were very dusty and dirty experiences!
brylonscamel
I had a chance to tart up some previously scratch-built buildings like this little harbourside weighbridge office. Here it is with a tiled roof, some roof decoration, new windows and a bit of paint ... 14
Popular Post brylonscamel
Whilst making my engine shed for 'Braeside' I thought I'd try a technique for making custom windows that Pete Goss recently described. Basically you paint lines onto acrylic glazing (clear plastic sheet) using a bow pen. My pen is ancient - I inherited from my mother's post-war German school set! These pens are very simple and handle ink or paint in the same way I found acrylics worked OK in the pen. The paint flows nicely when it is thinned with water until it has the consistency of single cream. I used a grey acrylic primer from the vallejo range as a base. You add colours to it to get the shades you want. This proved very good at adhering to the shiny acrylic glazing. After a short drying time you can apply masking tape and handle the glazing. Here's one of the drawings from which I drew inspiration .. Edited January 6, 2020 by brylonscamel 7
brylonscamel
Another scratch-build hits the drawing board. This will replace a Metcalfe structure - the last one to be bulldozed in favour of a new building! 4

It is indeed! ... well, the entrance and the start of one of the wings. It's mostly based on Aboyne station with its Victorian Scottish baronial turrets at each end! brylonscamel
In among all the big buildings are some small free-standing structures that I've knocked up. A wee 'but & ben' style cottage in Aberdeen granite (obviously!) and a goods shed for the distillery. Here's work-to-date ... 12

Thanks Martyn, that's a nice comment but don't be fooled by the rate of progress - it's largely a silly deadline that I set myself and a few late nights! I'm also single, which helps - so long as my collie dog gets some good walks I'm pretty much free to focus on whatever I want.
