Mike1220
God evening everyone, I keep seeing Lawrence and Goddard items popping up now and then on eBay. The certainly look like beautiful models but wondered if anyone can fill me in further as there is nothing about this 'manufacturer' online. I assume they were a kitbuilding and painting firm based solely in the UK? If they are hand painted I can only assume their employees were coach painters by trade, I'd never get the detail like that if I tried :-) Mike. Fat Controller
They were both professional model-makers and painters; both were one-man bands, I believe.
RMweb Gold stovepipe Posted August 27, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 27, 2019 Larry Goddard being 'coachman' on RMWeb, until he, well, left. Just watched some of these models go through an auction house last Friday. Very nice indeed and they almost all fetched a good price - £100+
Steamport Southport
David Lawrence was a professional builder who built kits from manufacturers such as BSL and Mallard. Larry Goddard painted them. Both to a very high standard. They were going for £50 plus even thirty or forty years ago when they were new. £100 now is a bargain. steve45
Why did Coachman leave?
RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted August 27, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 27, 2019 Derek Lawrence was a model builder, later stuff carried a Lawrence Scale Models label. He died c2003 IIRC. Larry Goddard is a model builder and primarily a high quality painter. He is still actively modelling.

steve45
Understood, thanks Jason for filling me in, I was so impressed with his modelling, its a shame things can get personal on forums, after all we are ultimately all just interested in model railways
Mike1220
Thank you all for the above posts, it has certainly helped me to understand the origins of these models a lot better. By the sounds of things Larry Goddard is someone who Id like to spend some time with in his workshop learning his painting techniques..... Its a shame he is no longer on this forum.

RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted September 3, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 3, 2019 Shop around and their vehicles can be much cheaper. Prototypes vary in value, of course. So Bulleids in both greens and blood-and-custard have been on ebay at nice prices once or twice. I bought several in rakes at an average price per vehicle of less than £60. Denbridge
I know this is an old thread, but beware of eBay listings that claim a model is from Lawrence or Goddard. Often they aren't. Some sellers add the names to ramp the prices.

RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted August 7, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 7, 2020 Derek Lawrence models had a label on at least in later years and much of Larry's painting work carries his signature and a date e.g. 89-XI underneath.
Brimstone
A few Lawrence models for auction at optimistic estimates, lot 209 onwards https://www.leonardauction.com/auction/auction-310/page/9/?fbclid=IwAR29n-bhMgOzDwLMOqm5gXc0WPuUiFje5vRmxE9nbLhbf79uJm9uQnBiL60_aem_AdFfP5KOruu8ZdrFS0WqTsoGdscn_diAnCln0FYZmzXLo-g84Cwq7K1P76kxHsvnOubLhxuslKExa2ObKcSHdT__

Almost worth a trip to the States… GWR Dreadnaughts etc… and a cornucopia of unbuilt 4mm kits too. Paul 1
RMweb Premium Siberian Snooper Posted November 17, 2023 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 17, 2023 If I was an 0 gauge modeller I would be jumping at the bit at those prices. 00 coaches are retailing at around 80 odd quid each! Scratch or kit built 0 gauge coaches have got to be worth a lot more than that!!

Add in the carraige cost and a lot of potential buyers could be put off. Some years ago SWMBO wanted to sell a very specialized musical instrument. A London dealer who she knew said he would give her £250 for it. He then told her that it would fetch well over £1000 in the states. He offered to take it over on his next trip and when he came back he gave her £1050. She did not ask how much his expenses came to in selling it as she was more than happy with the deal. Horses for courses. Bernard 3 1
RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted November 17, 2023 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 17, 2023 I reckon that the British O Gauge Stuff might sell to ex Brits over there, IF they know about the sale. Plates and similar would sell for at least treble those estimates here; they should be exported/imported and sold here. Phil
