Removing Wagon Buffers?

I have heard that the buffers on the Oxford Rail Wagons are removable, and I have a couple of ideas in mind with the buffers if that's true, but I do have a few questions. Are the buffer heads the only parts that are removable or do the buffer housings come off as well? How hard is it to remove the buffers? Are they removable on all wagon types or only a couple of them? Thanks in advance for answering.

On some models, it's necessary to remove the buffers if you want to separate the body and chassis.

The procedure seems to be, pull out the heads first, followed by pushing the body out from behind the buffer beam.

The first has been OK every time I've done it (so far) but the second occasionally not, because the body is such a tight fit (or possibly glued in) that the force required would/did cause damage.

In my experience, (GWR toads, LNER 6-plank and Cattle) I've always managed to get the buffers off (eventually), but they haven't necessarily been in a re-useable condition.

This is a photo of parts from their cattle wagon, all their wagons follow the same basic design.

Where possible it's best to try and push them out from behind, there shouldn't be much resistance.

PMP.

Do I note you have also removed the fitted coupler housing on the underside of the 7 plank?

Very helpful topic.

Thanks for sharing/asking Trainman2001

James,

yup I have, it’s a ‘terminal’ modification, they’re cut off with side cutters, so no going back!

Have you tried miniature end cutters ? ..... I use an old pair for chomping bits of plastic off like this and keep a sharper pair for removing etched bits from their frets.
