Swiss Rail "Holiday Snaps"

So - last full day, Friday 28th. The weather forecast was a dry morning but heavy rain/thunderstorms starting at 12. I'd only got Arosa to knock off the list so that was the obvious choice, I had wanted to do that by using the Parsennbahn from Davos to the ridge and then walking down to Langweis, but that would have taken me most of the morning and if the forecast had been on the optomistic side would have seen me getting pretty wet walking down the other side, so an all-rail routing it is...

On the up-side, Landquart provided several treats on the way out which i'd have missed walking:

Engineering diesels 23401 and 23402, plus tractor 84 were outside the new engineering depot

1080757325_RHB_84_23401_23402_Landquart_28082020(2)-X2.jpg.6aaca1101b229a037fce38c35ac5a130.jpg

The bar car was out and about - I think this was a Scuol bound service as it wasn't formed of push pull stock and had a tail load of vans too...

242 was busy laying new rail, I think this is where the Capricorn depot site is:

Sersa tamper 210144 was loaded on a pair of standard gauge flats - not sure whether this was inbound or outbound.

And we have a third Kirow - 99-85-9419-000-6

At Haldenstein we pass a standard gauge local
(We also passed a BLS powered intermodal, which I don't seem to have uploaded yet - will add that later!)

SBB_28082020-X2.jpg.c7e175da1287cea5e8ee2358da89f4de.jpg

Into Chur, the next Albula sports a pair of Gourmino and a pullman car

Whilst shooting the other side of the gourmino's, another standard gauge freight

We cross to the forecourt for the Arosa connection, the Innotren car is stabled here...

3504 arrives from Arosa

After unloading, it pulls its 3 coaches forward and drops them strategically to be picked up by the following train

And pulls the 4 coaches for our departure from the yard (the 4th is hidden behind the canopy stantion)

And as the weather isn't wet so far, this is our chariot for the next leg...

Departing Chur...

"Go straight across the roundabout...."

We meet 3506 on a Chur bound service at Luen-Castiel - the intermediate stations on this line are all gorgeous, and all in a very similar style...

1085731914_RHB_3506_LuenCastiel_28082020(2)-X2.jpg.4ec8996822f0f9d918025c2b87f4a6ed.jpg

At St Peter Molinnis - siding or wagon launching platform? ;)
A nice old van anyhow...

1343846994_RHB_9323_StPeterMolinnis_28082020(1)-X2.jpg.4e80e41539e8a8535691862cef74ea55.jpg

Approaching Langweis, with the viaduct.

1541127146_RHB_Langweis_28082020(1)-X2.jpg.dd49c9411e16acf688098f000ad3e0fd.jpg

At Litziruti we pass the second opposing train, with ABB liveried 3512 in charge. This one also had a luggage van and the Arosa first class saloon.

480352410_RHB_3512_Litziruti_28082020(1)-X2.jpg.8fd2a8258a32decb5e4f459351e1b881.jpg690344604_RHB_3512_Litziruti_28082020(15)-X2.jpg.89f73d0448c8735ac3e99c03ec60665c.jpg

Somebody was asking about the tunnel at Arosa, which was closed for engineering works the month after our visit - here's some pics, definitely a lot going on!

260534828_RHB_2111_Arosa_28082020(27)-X2.jpg.ef4e02f9ff199f86fe377e9b85c08386.jpg1187669117_RHB_Arosa_28082020(35)-X2.jpg.65c8907c9f350fb55147a70607093fca.jpg36530202_RHB_Arosa_28082020(37)-X2.jpg.0c8db0d81f7113daeb573c16802976e5.jpg

At Arosa, 3504 runs round the train - tractor 26 is based here as there's a steady stream of freight handled on the back of the passenger trains - there was evidence of oil, stone and coop traffic up here in the yard, as well as several intermodal wells in engineers use for the tunnel works.

1289373950_RHB_3504_26_Arosa_28082020(49)-X2.jpg.b58ef941c3cdb2bdaf51606f73baaf9c.jpg

A nice surprise, we'd not managed to see either of these on the Bernina, but "Bi Mode" 802 was the power for the works train here, obviously only in diesel mode!

1133411452_RHB_802_Arosa_28082020(103)-X2.jpg.99a634010fe3b4217def145e0956e458.jpg

Heading back on the train we came in on - 3506 waits for us a Litziruti, with a van for Arosa on the back.

Presume the bus turning circle was being got ready for the tunnel closure!

1988745481_RHB_3506_Litziruti_28082020(29)-X2.jpg.df3fdf12bf075eeb09ed1636052b2820.jpg

And at Luen Castiel we meet 3512 again, 3512's rake included one of the older driving trailers...

54889343_RHB_3512_LuenCastile_28082020(12)-X2.jpg.8344421b45747232744681f5962e29cc.jpg

....and Gourmino car 3812!

327397118_RHB_3812_LuenCastile_28082020(23)-X2.jpg.adae62166bd25c00efa05b7cc6364167.jpg

Passing the depot at Chur Sand, private owner van P10071 - I wasn't sure how useful the announcement of these vans in model form would be for a modern era modeller, but there's lots about, with lots of variety!

822197014_P10071_ChurSand_28082020(10)-X2.jpg.8d34849e9bd3838f53fb32560e75f99c.jpg

Back in Chur, shunter 214 is now stabled with the Innotren car

1808863544_RHB_214_Chur_28082020(109)-X2.jpg.79162ea61cbff11ebcab35aafdfe175e.jpg

Looking at the standard gauge side, the local stopping passenger to Sargans departs

1104678700_SBB_Chur_28082020(122)-X2.jpg.ba3a068f375b1b4d0958fef387e0361e.jpg

And we get lucky with a third standard gauge freight! 420337-8 leads this one, presumably heading for Ems judging from the consist.

1742940978_SBB_420337-8_Chur_28082020(127)-X2.jpg.0e5dd018f611effdb41ae3afce2ae769.jpg

....Meanwhile 3504 coupled on to the coaches left by the previous train (the set behind 3512 we shot earlier at Litziruti with the Arosa saloon,) pushes forward, and drops its 4 coaches in their place....

1167187175_RHB_2318_Chur_28082020(101)-X2.jpg.f5dad25d560168c911860eda16af2917.jpg

...then returns to the station on the correct end of it's new rake of stock.

A closeup of the "Barenwagon" from our train - there are 4 of these, one was on each of the 4 rakes of hauled stock on this day. (The operation uses 3x Allegra and 4x rakes of stock, with the stock swapping at Chur as above)

So having been lucky and the weather having held off so far, we decided on heading back to Davos Platz (via Landquart) to do a last round trip on the Krok...

Approaching Landquart, with freights ready to depart in each direction...

627229586_RHB_652_Landquart_28082020(78)-X2.jpg.9bfb64750b21e7669445ea9c1f32ef09.jpg1274312513_RHB_702_Landquart_28082020(88)-X2.jpg.d142e134b42ab2fe594d465157226a35.jpg

A quick glimpse of the roundhouse - view is often blocked by coaching stock rakes at present!

617, 605 and I think 647 visible, the other cab is a 528xx driving trailer, plus the back of something else - not sure whether it's a Capricorn car or one of the Alvra sets.

2089590391_RHB_Landquart_28082020(95)-X2.jpg.c4ff909db0450dfecdc4ed00a3bac687.jpg

Shunter 233 was working today, sister 232 and 20604 standing by.

1965500061_RHB_232_233_20604_Landquart_28082020(109)-X2.jpg.b124513f8f978f9fcc1386f4449f2bc8.jpg

Back at Davos Platz the Krok was already waiting - as the rain hadn't hit yet we went for the open coaches on the outward journey...

1034075432_RHB_415_DavosPlatz_28082020(5)-X2.jpg.4936b87abc61bf1e1c69b0ae085f5d94.jpg

That sky though! The Pendelzug does a shunt move...

As we came into Filisur it got properly wet...

1596823967_RHB_415_Filisur_28082020(19)-X2.jpg.beff9a48ac128f24a5391b22afb191b9.jpg

Luckily white loco's on the Albula trains helped - 642 and 643...

532160336_RHB_642_Filisur_28082020(21)-X2.jpg.9336cab9efc4f14fa6c169a8c3d4240a.jpg1734194336_RHB_643_Filisur_28082020(51)-X2.jpg.6a3bbfd95261fdd8994f857dab65e67c.jpg

I did sit in the open coach leaving Filisur.....but it didn't last long! The inside of one of the 2nd class bogie coaches...

IMG_20200828_162948-X2.jpg.6f8e54e4a1f9fa09432836568772a903.jpg

Arriving back into Davos Platz

415 stabled next to 704, which is about to depart on the daily freight (2 wagons, bins and Spar)

We didn't twig that this had parked heritage rake the opposite way round to normal at the time...

307033247_RHB_415_704_DavosPlatz_28082020(153)-X2.jpg.43e7a47120df5bd24de41b0fb774aa11.jpg

Looking the other way...

1539926296_RHB_612_DavosPlatz_28082020(109)-X2.jpg.0e2e49356aee6caadec7749c21018f81.jpg

With that done, a quick supermarket visit let me pick up this shot of the Pendelzug departing

2006278898_RHB_511_DavosPlatz_28082020(180)-X2.jpg.9de6fc91bffbf6df362d8cbbe0825f5d.jpg

And a bit of Capricorn reflection - and that brings the last full day to a close.

It’s most likely another driving trailer off one you can’t fit a full unit in those roads. I think it’s only the two or three on the right hand side that give access to the unit shed. It’s unusual to see driving trailers in there!

It's obviously not a full unit, but it must be a car split from one of the normally indivisible types judging from the coupler setup and lack of pipework.

Another angle....

RHB_Landquart_28082020 (93) (1).JPG

Yeah I agree that rear end looks like one off a unit. I guess the rest of the unit is in the Allegra shed off the right of the table. The extra curved track is used to access that and I guess they’ve shoved them in there out of the way?

Don't think it's possible to tell: it appears the rear bogie is on the left hand track, so if the rest of the unit were there, you wouldn't see it because of the angles. Also the sun's in the wrong place for any shadows from the rest of the unit to show up

Nice to see the picture of tractor Tm2/2 26 at Arosa. My G scale model of this tractor is based on photos taken in 1993 when TM2/2 26 was based at Surava - as marked on the blue background label "Heimat Station SURAVA" on the side shown in these pictures.

P1060907.jpg.cbf35a80b250296f7f1189a5ab4c07af.jpg

From starting the model to final finishing took 20 years - most of the delay being down to the transfer maker - eventually a very good job was done, but not before threats of legal action were made. during the build time LGB brought out their similar model, but I'm pleased to have my home-brewed version.

Sorry for interrupting your thread.

Regards

Chris H

Arosa, 3504 runs round the train

So it’s just an illusion :)

Quite normal to run all the way up the yard to the shed and sometimes stays up there for a bit.

Just for fun as I hadn't uploaded these when I posted the shots from this day - on the 27th I tried a couple of mobile phone panorama shots from the train down to Tirano seeing if I could work in the front and back of the train in the same shot - they didn't quite work perfectly, but good fun, and worth a play if you find yourself in the middle of the train.

The first is between Cavaglia and Cadera, the second is the Bruscio spiral.

To bring this to a close - Saturday 29th we both left on the 8.02 departure towards Landquart, with 626 for power....

990922900_RHB_626_DavosPlatz_29082020(9)-X2.jpg.d3f91e35724131d382371ef9e02b5149.jpg

Our hosts had kindly dropped us at the station (more or less drove right onto the platform!) which was nice as the weather was very wet.

Climbing over to Klosters we passed the heritage set, which must have gone to Landquart (or Samedan?) I presume overnight...we hadn't noticed it was missing at Davos Platz due to getting the lift across to the station, and we hadn't twigged the significance of them stabling it the "wrong" way round last night either - nice little tip there for anyone else that visits!

Ah well...

At Landquart Jon and I parted company as we had different routings back to the UK - I made a tight connection to the next fast Zurich service whilst Jon's plan was to visit a couple of places before an afternoon flight.

Some Zurich Hbf shots...my inbound service was the left hand one of these two, and as I had a 37min connection here I had time to take a few shots:

SBB_Zurich_20200829_102554-X2.jpg.5431a3a1334ba619b82886cb2c1ce6fc.jpg

Nice to see the RE4/4 are still around.

My outgoing service was EC8 bound for Hamburg Altona, which I would take as far as Cologne.

SBB_11139_20200829_103930-X2.jpg.f1eb979f7320be678f5e0629c8ec4325.jpg

And at my destination (which was not the Gotthard!)

IMG_20200829_172023-X2.jpg.5bcd91bbb8ec59b81882bd91126cf140.jpg

The next day, Cologne to Exeter St Davids by ICE/Eurostar/GWR - and that was that, I expect the RhB to look rather different if/when I get back again.

RhB photo's are all filed here, in what is hopefully a usable way for modelers - I hope to expand out the locations and coaching stock in a similar way to the loco's and wagons/plant in time:
https://ukrailwaypics.smugmug.com/Non-UKrails/Switzerland/Overseas-Rails-Rhätische-Bahn

The "locations" is a bit station-centric - On the Albula and Bernina in particular I shot some infra and general shots between stations and haven't tied those down the actual locations - they can be found in the days collections if you're searching for pics of those lines in particular.

Master link for viewing by days is here:
