RMweb Gold cambo74 Posted September 19, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 19, 2019 Hi guys - I've got 10 Lima Class 50s to renumber but sadly when i try wet n dry or TCut it take the paint off - any ideas about what to use to take them off without removing the paint too ?? Cheers Ben
Guest JiLo
You might get away with using a fibreglass pencil lightly, otherwise its a repaint
Steamport Southport
Lima is almost certainly a strip/rub down and repaint job I'm afraid. Made before the modern methods of printing models. Jason
royaloak
It sounds like you are using a cotton bud and covering too large an area, I find the best method is a cocktail stick which has been sat in T cut and carefully used so it only contacts the actual numbers is best, okay its a bit slow and tedious but the effects can be quite good. The paint on Lima locos is very thin.
crompton 33
Just get some Sellotape put it on the numbers then rub with a cocktail stick . Now remove the Sellotape the numbers will come off as well. Job done with NO paint damage. I've done a few class 73's and 33's this way. SRman
The Sellotape method has also worked well for me in the past, with the same model types as crompton33 described, and a 37 as well.
Wheatley
Lima paint is so easy to get off (meths will do it) that almost any solvent will wreck it. If sellotape doesn't work it's a repaint.
RMweb Premium richierich Posted October 12, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 12, 2019 Tried this on a Lima Class 31 130 in RF coal livery. Sellotape doesn’t work at all on one of these.

If sellotape doesn't work it's a repaint. Lima models have got to be the easiest to strip back to the base moulding - the paint just rinses off in meths to reveal a pristine moulding. I upgraded dozens of Lima Mk.1s a few years ago, and preparing them for repainting was a dream. Regards, John Isherwood.
royaloak
Try a dry cocktail stick to chip away at the numbers, Lima paint is rather um thin to say the least.
saxokid
I use white spirits or brasso on cotton buds for gently removing loco decals... without messing up paint work...

Have you done that on Lima locos? The paint is so thin if you use any sort of solvent it usually washes the paint off around the decals leaving them in place.
