hoovered
I have just bought two Hornby locos, R2448 Lady Patricia and R2542 City of Wells, both say DCC ready on the box but the instructionssay nothing about a chip. Are these locos DCC ready or not ? Thanks.
RMweb Gold RFS Posted September 20, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 20, 2019 DCC Ready means they can be converted to DCC operation by adding a suitable decoder. Any model which already has a decoder installed is termed DCC Fitted.
RMweb Gold tetsudofan Posted September 20, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 20, 2019 Not quite sure when these models were released but on the earlier models that were shown as DCC ready on the box the instructions normally mentioned talking to your dealer about fitting the decoder. Open up the models and you should find an 8-pin socket with a blanking plug. If there is enough space available it should be possible to fit a Hattons 8-pin Direct Decoder, that's what I do with all my Hornby locos (with the exception of the small Pecketts etc.) as soon as I get them. NickC
DCC ready means they contain a socket to allow a DCC decoder chip of your choice to be fitted by you. If they came ready fitted with a DCC decoder they would be termed DCC Fitted.

jpendle
Don't forget that the socket will have a 'blanking plug' in it. This is to allow DC running, it is NOT a DCC decoder. Regards, John P

I have City of Wells and the DCC socket is in the loco (I.e. not in the tender as most current models have) which makes it a bit of a squeeze for fitting a DCC chip. I managed to fit a Hornby tts chip but used a cube speaker as there wasn’t room for the standard Hornby speaker. It also sounds better!
