Evening all, I want to model a large mound of ballast. Just wondering what I could use as a 'core' to build the mound around, any tips?

Thank you.

Never mind modelling piles.

i wish someone would tell me

how to get rid of them

(Apolpgies for introducing thread drift

so early in a new topic but it's a subject

very close to my heart at the moment,

well actually a certain other part of

my anatomy, but we won't go there).

Oh dear, too much information!!!

A tip for making more realistic piles of bulk material is to Google "static angle of repose" which should lead you to tables which will tell you the angle at which particular materials will pile up if left to their own devices.

I had been thinking of using polystrene packaging material covered with plaster (for the 'core') for an aggregates terminal which will be my next small layout project.

However, the egg box idea looks good. I think I'll give it a try.
