When did 30’ containers become uncommon

Hornby sell a lot of their older container flat wagons with two 30’ containers. Now days everything is 20’, 40 and increasingly 45’.

when did the 30’ drop out of regular use?

I am guessing that a lot of the liveries Hornby’s 30’ container carries are fictitious to the point where, they only appeared on 20’ and 40’ ones.

30' containers were a compromise until lorry trailers were allowed to be 40' long. Previously, the maximum container length allowed in the UK was 27', though these were non-ISO boxes.

Almost all Hornby box liveries can be considered 'fictitious' to a greater or lesser degree, as the boxes themselves are of a type that had become redundant by the early 1970s, when Freightliner went over to 'top-lift' boxes conforming to ISO norms.

The main use of 30' boxes nowadays is the 'Bulktainer' market, common markings being IFF and UBC, though I have seen others. All have roof loading hatches, whilst some just have a 'letter-box' end hatch, and others have a 'letterbox' hatch with normal doors above, giving more operational flexibility.

Great update! Now to change the livery to IFF or UBC.

Just found this!

Wrong scale, but helpful!

If you want these in 00, then they are available in kit form from C-Rail and have been for many years - https://www.c-rail-intermodal.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=25_29&product_id=124

They also do a bulk pack of five 30' kits - https://www.c-rail-intermodal.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=25_29&product_id=125

They also do IFF transfers for these kits but I'm sure you could apply these to other containers if you wish - https://www.c-rail-intermodal.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=25_30&product_id=120

Also IBC / UBC transfers - https://www.c-rail-intermodal.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=25_30&product_id=121

I wish he did them as decorated models; those transfers were a struggle for me to apply.

Other than the bulk containers 30ft General purpose  containers were rare by the late 80s/early 90s, I remember because on my first day working for a container haulier, my colleague explained he hadn't seen a 30ft box for at least 10 years. Less than an hour later 1 was brought into the yard for storage, much to my colleagues amazement. It went out later that week, never saw another 30ft GP ever again.
