Nick Holliday
The current-ish issue of Steam Days has an interesting article by Leslie Freeman describing his attempts at touring GWR branchlines around London, out to Maidenhead, Marlow and High Wycombe, using only steam hauled services in March 1957. There have been at least two recent threads covering layouts based within this area, and I think there is a lot of detailed background information in the article that would flesh out the bare bones of the timetables. The one down side is that it was carried out on a Saturday, although there seems to have been plenty of commuter traffic, as was usual at the time. It has a couple of snippets that might be of general interest - a pannier tank still in GWR livery, nine years after nationalisation, and a description of the run-round procedures at HIgh Wycombe, where the bay platform wasn't long enough, so the train had to be backed out of the platform to allow the loco to run-round, but when that manouevre was completed, they didn't bother to back the train into the platform, instead leaving three coaches beyond the platform. If that was done on a model layout there would be hell to pay. Another article that might appeal to some here, particularly those from Castle Aching, is a piece on William Adams and his mixed traffic locos, covering the NLR, GER and LSWR (and Brecon & Merthyr Railway!) 1
Steamport Southport
Good issue. It's one of those magazines I pick up occasionally, but seem to be buying most months recently. This month is a good one as well with interesting articles on the GWR 1101 0-4-0 tanks, Waterloo station and a trip behind a GER E4 2-4-0 near the end of East Anglian steam.
