Looking forward to visiting on Saturday. I saw Sherton Abbas at Railex earlier this year so I decided it would be nice to have another look. As well as that it will also be nice to see Danemouth for real, it's one of the layouts I look out for on here, and looking at the list some other quality layouts.

I will be accompanied by my wife and we have booked a few nights at the Barry Island Premier Inn, that sounds so much nicer than Barry Docks! It will be interesting to see how much has changed since I was a lad.

Also hoping to meet up with some RMWebbers, especially those who have commented on my Llanforen thread.

Here's to Saturday.

Also hoping to meet up with some RMWebbers,

John Miles (The tall one) will be on Ynysybwl .......
I won't be there, I'm running (aka organising) a BIG Charity event in west Cornwall.
We have Rev. James on tap at the bar(s), so some sort of connection to Cardiff  :).

Found this year was not as good as last year I'm afraid, only 'modern image' were Hornby models from the 70s and 80s.

I don't think I'll bother next year unless there's a bit more variety.

That's not strictly correct but why not offer your own layout for a future show?

I made the trip from deepest. darkest Newport (Monmouthshire) all the way to Llandaff. I thought it was a good show. Not too many traders, but some very good layouts, especially Ynysbwl, and Talybont. Foxcote caught my eye, and the depth of scenery was spot-on; very convincing. One gent, (Geoff Morris?) was demonstrating some plasticard modelling, and made the show for me. His model  of Black Lion Crossing is an excellent rendition of a McKenzie & Holland signal box, which was faithful down to the barge boards; beautifully done.

The pasties were good as well. I've got a couple here to do some groundwork in the back garden.

Yes, it was a good show; just the right balance.  And yes, I will be back next year.

Ian.

There seems to be an increasing lack of traders who sell modelling bits at exhibitions. We recently exhibited at the Woking show and I wanted to buy some superglue - there was none on sale but lots of box shifters. At Cardiff, I wanted some Humbrol enamel paints and plastic brick sheet and superglue. There was a man selling glue but it wasn't superglue but for basic modelling supplies such as scalpel blades, plasticard etc there was nothing. In the case of the Cardiff show I know the problem lies not with the organisers but with the traders.

The trade support wasn't great, I felt.

I wanted a pack of code 75 fishplates -  no one had them. In fact only one trader had any fishplates at all on display and they were only Code 100 or 009/N ones. Eventually I found a solitary pack of insulated ones in a rummage bin, but no metal ones.

I also spoke to another modeller who wanted to buy a tin of Humbrol paint - none on sale. The only paint that I saw was the poorly labelled military model range sold by one of the traders, also with a load of military models. As it happened I wanted some Luftwaffe colours for another modelling project but the paints were so poorly displayed that i gave up trying to work out which shades were which, so placed an order for some Vallejo ones when I got home.

The trade support seemed to be split between some new RTR and a large amount of second hand tat, but (as above) lacking in the essentials like fishplates, and then a big jump to the Dragon Models etched range (excellent as it is) and nothing in between. I've exhibited at the show in the past and hope to do so again, so I hope my comments are constructive rather than nit-pickery, but I do feel the trade support was indifferent. I did however buy an excellent book from Lightmoor's usual fine selection.

And don't I know it - having been allocated the plot next to him for two days.

.

Why did he need a 'mike' and 'p.a.' to speak to punters standing less than a yard away from him ?

.

My wife said I kept her awake last night, mumbling in my sleep   ".....it will hold rubber, and leather, it will hold shoes together....." (but he didn't appear to tried it on his blue 'crocs' !)

Always a tricky one.....trade as I guess you can only ask.

My list included Sea Foam (the one bloke selling the scenic stuff had no idea what it was!), three hole disc wheels (Ideally Romford/Markits) and some brass/plastic tube to make street and yard lights.

I also wanted some Railmatch etc track colour and underframe dirt.

The shows not unusual in that you just cant get the traders to attend, or at least the traders I would want to attend.

I came away with a rtr tar tanker (Dapol as try getting hold of a kit these days).

Its still a great small show tho, with several top class layouts and WELL worth the trip.

He couldn't put the mike down, it was stuck to his fingers!

Anyways, I bought lots of glue; all different types of glue.  I had so much glue, I didn't know what to do with the rest....

I guess i'll just have to sniff it.....*

*For those genteel folk reading this at home, I can categorically state that I have never sniffed glue, but I did try a pint of Strongbow on the way home...

Along with my wife we were at the show on Saturday and it was well worth the trip down from Mansfield and having a short break. It was a very good show and excellent value not forgetting a ride on the vintage coach. The layouts ranged from good to exceptional and it was a pleasure to talk to many of the operators especially those that post on RMWEB.

As for trade, it is not easy to get the specialists that many of us like to see, they rightly, for their own business, will want to go to shows where there are a lot of potential customers. I didn’t go looking to buy anything but I did find a Dean Goods loco body at a reasonable price which will eventually be used for a project I have in mind.

Well done and thanks to all involved.

The gent you refer to is Geoff Kent.
