Jack,

Thanks very much for your kind comments, and from such a skilled and knowledgeable modeller! I have learnt a lot from both building the K2 and from all the tips received from the community.

Hope all is well with you and Linda?

Kind regards,

Richard b

A quick update on the tender, going fairly well.

Have added some scratch built detail on the tank top. Larger circular cover is a blanking plate for the provision of water scoop which, as far as I can tell, was not fitted to "my" loco. Second smaller plate is for mounting the filler.

Kind regards,

Richard B

Loving your 61784, very nice indeed, I think when time and pennies permit a London road kit will have to appear on my desk. It’s so much finer than the old nu cast kit. Mind that’s not to say the older kit is rubbish as it isn’t but it’s simply from a different time.

Kingfisher24 61774 looks very, very good, great work. Yes I agree, older cast kits are from a different era however with care and preparation they can look really good as you have proven.

No work last three weeks Mrs B and I have been in Vietnam on hols. A truly lovely country and lovely people.

Just be careful in Hanoi the two wheeled traffic is everwhere and I mean everywhere including the "interesting" footpaths. Still we were never actually struck by a moped/scooter nutter so perhaps they were more considerate than we realised. Loved it though and recommend it.

Kind regards,

Richard B

Slowly getting back to work after three week Vietnam adventure with Mrs B. Lovely country and people. In voluntary "quarantine" for two weeks.

Tender making progress, brake gear now (mostly) fitted. Always fiddly. I tend to fit (solder or super glue) brake hangers to top mounting at the required angle using lower brake beam to align hanger angles across the wheelset. The beam is then soldered to the lower fixing point on the hanger. The Ivatt tender fitted to the K2 has outside brake actuation rods so that makes the job a bit simpler.

Body and underframe united, it needs trimming before final assembly.

Frame showing brake gear details.

Last picture shows underside of tender body showing that nearely all the soldering is on the inside (As recommended Mr Edge) so although it is a little messy in places it won't show.

Quick update on the tender.

Connector for tender pick-ups soldered up and those tricky handrails at the front of this version of the Ivatt tender now in place. Next will be the coal rail.

I still have to clean up the handrails! sorry about the focus.

On another subject. I have discovered some of the B&W pictures that I took with my Brownie 127 (?) camera back in the 1960s. I would like to print/digitise and upload to Flicker or similar for all to look at. They are not all that good (my camera work has been consistant over the last 60 years or so - very average!) Does anyone know of a specialist that can do such things???

Kind regards,

Richard B

Final pictures before painting, all details added except for buffer heads which will be fitted after painting after they have been etched black.

Railmatch Single Pack etch primer applied needs some correction here and there.

Note: Again, adds nothing.

Well, at last 61784 is complete and ready for delivery to Bentley Model Railway group. They will be fitting a DCC chip.

It has been a challanging build. In particular the valve gear needs careful thought during construction. One needs to always think of the next two or three steps ahead. The quality of the etches are very high although some of the parts are very, very small. The castings are really first class. Given all that, it builds into a very accurate and attractive model. I enjoyed building it but please (and London Road Models make this clear!) don't tackle it if you are just starting out building locos!

Well onwards and upwards, I will now recommence building my Ace Products N15X 4-6-0. In BR days these were all shedded at Basingstoke so I have to build one!

Some final pictures, the prototype first.

PS Valve gear needs some weathering!

I have now assembled all the parts necessary to start building a London Road Models K2 2-6-0 kit. I will construct the K2/2 side window cab version that operated on the Scottish Region since the completed model is destined for the Bentley Model Railway Group's "Kannotburn" layout.

I am using Alan Gibson wheels, a Mashima 14/20 motor and a multibox two stage gearbox supplied by Branchlines. I do have the small matter of completing the Alan Gibson ex LSWR G6 kit but as soon as this is finished I shall start. I do not claim to be an expert or anything similar more an "improver" working through a large-ish collection of white metal and brass loco kits and learning much from each construction. An image of the prototype follows, interesting loco's designed and built before the great Gresley became enamoured of three cylinder engines ( I'm not forgetting the J38/9s).

Hi RIchard,

It looks like a lot of your photos got lost for this thread - do you happen to have them to reinstate as I have one of these in the roundtuit pile :)

Thanks,

Richard

Have finished working my way through - excellent work, obviously I followed it at the time as I have commented, must be this thread that made me buy my one.

Without checking it looks like the same kit designer as the LRM N1 I want to finish..

Malcolm Crawley designed the K2/2 and was involved in the N1 but I think Paul Craig produced the CAD drawings for that.
