doilum
As this is aimed specifically at 7mm modelers I have posted it here. Has anyone got experience based advice on the best ratio for my Hachette Scotsman St Frusquin? My first thoughts lean towards the abc product ( this will be #6), but I am open to budget conscious ideas too. Whilst it will rarely get the opportunity I would like it to be able to haul a full length train, perhaps on the guild's test track.
LaScala
Treat yourself to the ABC, you will not regret it. You need 25:1 or thereabouts IMO.
Simond
Premier Components have a similar helical gearbox, 30:1, Canon motor. I have one in my Duchess (videos on the thread, link below), it doesn’t lack pulling power! i suspect that with modern motors, and DCC, the choice of gear ratio is far less important than it was. hth Simon
doilum
Thanks, just needed that bit of confirmation. Although I am strictly analogue, St Frusquin will be DCC to allow it visiting rights elsewhere.
doilum
Just considering all options. Has anyone got experience of the MSC JH motors?
JeffP
Pretty sure they are the ex-Ron Chaplin ones, so a good match for ABC.

It was the John Hart motor with a worm driven two stage drive that had caught my eye, especially with a good discount for Guild members.
JeffP
I'd always now go for a helicoidal drive, rather than worm and wheel. If you can stretch to one.
doilum
Thanks. I have been hoping to hear from someone lucky enough to have experience of full length trains. This might of course open an entirely new debate on current draw and dcc. Always willing to learn.
