These Pecketts are charming little chaps.

I have a couple and I have to say this thread is making me question whether or not I should be building a little somewhere for them to play on.

That Ruston thingy from Hornby hasn't helped either...........

Hi Stu,

It's more a question of trying to identify problems before they happen, really. Because nearly all the rolling stock and the locos on this layout will be short wheelbase, and the curves are tight, there's more of a chance of them shorting than would be the case for longer wheelbase locos. And I just don't like the idea that the "open" switch blade could possibly be the wrong polarity, I much prefer that the closure rails and switch blades stay the same as their adjacent stock rail.

So to answer the question, no, there probably isn't a need to do this, it just makes me happier.

Al.

All of my engines are short wheelbase and most are 0-4-0, plus all of my rolling stock is short wheelbase and there has never been any problem with this, so I don't think what you've done is necessary. The only point I've ever had a problem with was a Peco 3-way. I'd make very sure that everything runs well over that filled in gap before putting ballast down, so that you can change the point before it's too late.

I've been busy completing the decorating, but now that's out of the way, I can get on with Cawdor.

I did some extensive testing of the track over the last week, and so last night I sprayed the track, and then glued it down, apart from the top curved siiding, which I need to consider further.

wCawdor-Quarry068.jpg.c533a039b95909f8b32b68aaaa470647.jpg

So this evening I wired it all up:

First, I attached the PowerCab panel:

wCawdor-Quarry069.jpg.c65dfb11023e04b9d3d68b68f0f51a6e.jpg

And added the frog juicers. This means that for the moment I can run the layout just using hand power to change the points, but I can add Seep motors later if I want to.

So here we are, all wired up and working:

I can start thinking about ground cover and scenery now.

Thanks for looking,

Al.

First bit of scenic modelling then, is the retaining wall between the lower and upper sidings.

This is a strip of Slaters' 4mm random stone, with a 6.4mm square section styrene rod stuck on the back for strength:

The coping stones are a sections of Plastruct 6.4mm half-round rod.

Ever the masochist, I use a razor saw to cut slits across the rod every few mil.

Then I clean off the swarf:

Then I use a scalpel to open out the slits:

I may be some time...

Top stuff, Al. Another classic taking shape.

There's nothing wrong with pokey finger points, by the way............

This evening, a bit of landscaping.

Ive started to build the quarry face that will provide the backdrop to the scene.

It will be higheer than this, but I'm doing it in stages to make sure it's all stuck together solidly. It's made up of layers of 25mm insulation foam, and once all dried, this will be faced with filler, and sculpted, and then painted, but for now it gives an idea of the final result.

Then I started to add the ground cover, again using filler, roughly smoothed for the moment:

So far, this is turning out just as I imagined it:

Hi Al, I am not going to make any mention of the axle stands, I presume that you ran out of bananas. All the best Adrian.

Thanks for not mentioning them Adrian. :)

Sometimes bananas just don't cut it, and I have to resort to the axle stands. Be grateful it wasn't the breeze blocks!

I'm thinking of doing a similar sort of rock face for T-CATS, but I'll raise one end of the stack so the strata lines are angled.

Are you using any special kind of filler, or just powder / water mixed (or ready mixed) stuff ?

Hi Stu, I'm using some el-cheapo ready-mixed stuff, but it does claim to be flexible, so I'm hoping it doesn't all crack and fall off...

I'm going to try and replicate how I managed the cutting sides on my Bakewell layout, which turned out OK, see here:
