RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted October 26, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 26, 2019 Near Derbyshire quarries Al, everything was, and in places still is, covered in lime dust, buildings, trees, roads, men!! 1
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted October 26, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 26, 2019 (edited) Hi Jonathan, Yes, definitely, that's what I'm going to try to achieve, but I want to get the underlying stone colour right first. From this photo, the wall looks quite dark in places, under it's lime coat, so I think I need to darken the whole thing down before the white top brushing: Copyright Tarmac Roadstone. I think it is a limestone wall though, rather than gritstone. Maybe darken the mortar rather than the stone? Cheers, Al. RMweb Gold Popular Post Alister_G Posted October 26, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted October 26, 2019 (edited) This evening I've built the front building. I started with a sheet of 40thou plasticard: and cut out the front, based on the dimensions of the cardboard mockup: Then I took some Plastruct 4.8mm "H" beam: and added the vertical supports for the building: These are both cosmetic - they look like what the real building would be constructed from, and they also work to stop warping in the vertical plane. To minimise warping in the horizontal plane, I added offcuts of the 40thou sheet on end - these will both keep the structure rigid, and act as bearing plates to add further beams to. I then added the return wall on the left end: and then the final bay which is set back from the others: Then I cut out the back section from the 40thou sheet and added the vertical beams: and more horizontal bracing: To the front section, I started adding the beams which join the two halves together: Then brought the front and back together to check the alignment of the beams, etc. This is not stuck together yet. You can see I have used two sections of "V" truss as well, as I thought they would add to the industrial feel of the building. They won't be seen from outside, but looking into the interior they will be plainly visible: Looks very industrial... Here is the building, now stuck together: and here it is in position on the layout: I will continue with this tomorrow, adding the roof, and the buildings on the roof, and then cladding it all in more corrugated sheets. Thanks for looking, Al. Edited October 26, 2019 by Alister_G 7
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted October 26, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 26, 2019 I've applied an all-over dilute wash of Humbrol 91 Black Green to the retaining wall, to try and darken it as discussed: When this has thoroughly dried in the morning, I'll look at adding a dry-brushed coat of matt white for limestone dust. Thanks for looking, Al. 13
RMweb Gold westerhamstation Posted October 27, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 27, 2019 Hi Al, lovely job and some great pictures of your modelling, it's all coming together very nicely. All the best Adrian.
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted October 27, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 27, 2019 Thanks Adrian, Here's what the wall looks like now it's dry, and in daylight: I think that will do for the base colouring, so later I'll have a go at weathering and adding limestone dust. RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted October 27, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 27, 2019 (edited) A bit more buildage: The roof and front of the building have been given a blast of Matt Tan, as a basis for a concrete colour. Lots of corrugated cladding to do. Thanks for looking, Al. Edited October 27, 2019 by Alister_G 11

RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted October 29, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 29, 2019 Here at Cawdor, there has been much corrugation: and a little bit of paintage, too: Some roofage to follow, and some windowness, then much more paintage. Thanks for looking, Al. 13
RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted October 29, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 29, 2019 Another masterpiece in the making, looking forward to seeing the finished article
RMweb Gold Popular Post Alister_G Posted October 29, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted October 29, 2019 Thanks Chris. I couldn't resist giving it a quick blast of Gunmetal, just to get rid of the white styrene, and see how it looked: Hmm, not bad. This will give me something to stick the rivets onto. I need to do something similar to the big building, but I'm waiting for a restock of Grey spray paint. Cheers, Al. 16

RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted October 31, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 31, 2019 (edited) This evening has been concerned with windowness. I started with 4 sections of 20thou x 80thou strip, and 4 sections of 20thou square strip: The 20thou square was stuck in the middle of the 80thou strip, and then I started joining the sections together to form the window frame: Then I cut a load of 10thou x 20thou microstrip, and stuck on the verticals: and then the horizontals: Then, I did it all again, only smaller... and here they are test fitted in the building: You may note some basic doorness has appeared as well... You might also note some roofosity in the final pic, as well. Neither windows or doors are fixed in place yet, as they will be painted separately. Thanks for looking, Al. RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted October 31, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 31, 2019 Thanks guys, I do like to mangle the Engly Languid on occasion for a bit of fun. Chris, I know (I hope) that you were joking about feeling guilty, but really, everybody models in their own way, and I'm lucky enough to be good at carving up bits of styrene. But look at Andrew P, he does exactly what you do, despite years of us nagging him to scratchbuild something, but he turns out the most beautiful and believable layouts, at a rate that surpasses any other modeller on this forum. (I hate him ) Warren Branch, and the loco shed and everything, are absolutely top notch modelling, and you should be proud of it. Al. 2 5

Oh yee, maketh me to modest to comment, I cant do Urban / Buildings / Townie things yong Al, and it's the same with my Paintings, I cant do perspective in Buildings etc, but enjoy Landscapes / Rural etc. I can't even cut a 90 degree corner without making it 92 and a bit degrees, haha.

Gordon A Hi Gordon, as far as I can see from prototype photos, the siding doesn't actually enter the building, it stops short, and so does my interpretation of it, although the angle of the photo makes it look as though it goes further, so clearance shouldn't be an issue.
