Hi John,

Thanks very much. No, I think bevelled corners is a step too far...

I agree, it needs to look more dusty. I don't know if you can get white weathering powders - I would expect so - so I might have to get some.

Alternatively, I could just chuck some Johnson's Baby  Powder at it... It would smell nice, too... :D

Cheers mate,

Al.

I'm sure Humbrol do a white weathering powder Al.

When I laid the curved siding at the back of the yard, I forgot to paint it, so first job this evening was to mask off the world, and give it a blast of Tamiya Red Brown.

Once that had dried, I was able to do the next job, which is to start to bring the ground up to rail-top level.

So the track was masked off, and more filler added:

I put the retaining wall back in position to identify any low spots:

wCawdor-Quarry192.jpg.1d9a6427cf911c1ea2712f93673b4712.jpg

And added more filler:

Finally, I removed the masking tape whilst the filler was still wet - as I wasn't sure what would happen if I let it dry - and removed any overspill:

Although there's a fair depth of filler, I'm hoping it will be dry by tomorrow evening, and I can sand it to it's final shape.

Then, I'll do the other side.

Thanks for looking,

Al.

I go away for a month, and, bish bash bosh, you're at it again!

There's a medical term for it I believe, "Swadlincoteitis"!

Excellent modelling as ever.

Presumably this will be the northern end of a string of layouts working their way down to Cromford to connect with the C&HPR and Ladmanlow sidings?

For mitred corners in plastic and brass, I find one of these invaluable;

I’ll try that next time Sarah comes back from having her hair done at the salon and let you know how I get on

Do you want flowers at the funeral, or just donations?

You know how I said there'd be a plan "B" for applying rivets?

Well...

Here it is...

wCawdor-Quarry209.jpg.f676b4f378826b28f1925c52ba3a4490.jpg

I'm sure Adrian (Westerham) would be proud of the Acme Rivet Mask(TM)  patent pending.

I know it looks like a cowpat suffering from wood worm, but it is in fact an offcut of styrene with lots of holes drilled through it.

This is then held over the subject, and Humbrol Dark Earth sprayed through it from a rattle-can.

This is the result:

Of course, you have to be careful how much paint you use... Here I may have  been a little enthusiastic...

wCawdor-Quarry211.jpg.5c17f0b6921d8891777b06ab5d01d55b.jpg

However, there's lots of weathering to add yet, to hide my sins.

Ah well, there's always plan "C".

No, I haven't thought of it yet, but I'm sure it will be great...

Cheers,

Al.

Just now, chuffinghell said:

It looks quite effective to me but I get the impression you’re not entirely happy with it (reference to plan C)

I'm happy with the front face, but really annoyed that I overdid it on the side. Unfortunately as I used the mask it became increasingly contaminated, and dripped more paint onto the surface.

I should have made another one really to keep it clean.

However, it's done, and it doesn't look too bad.

Thanks Mike,

Someone else mentioned that - either here or on a different thread - and I tried it on a scrap piece as a test. Either my PVA, cocktail stick or general ineptitude meant that I couldn't get consistent small blobs, so I gave up.

You can make a small indent with point of a scriber to blob the glue into which I find helps, and there are those who just make the indent and weather that, as from normal viewing distances the eye can't make out concave/convex shapes under a slathering of weathering!

Hi Al, I have passed your idea for the Acme Rivet Mask to the Research & Development dept at at Acme Enginnering Works who have expressed an intrest in it. They have found one or two holes in the design concept but would be quite willing for you to develop the idea further. All the best from the Acme Enginnering Works.

PS: the paintage looks great.

Thanks guys.

Adrian, I will get the working drawings over to Acme Engineering Works, and they can set up their foundry. I admit there are some holes in the design, but hopefully they can fill in the blanks.

Thanks Steve, I think after a good dose of lime, it should be fine.

This evening, I been mostly getting plastered.

First, I continued to try and bury the sidings under filler:

wCawdor-Quarry213.jpg.87fce7baa9aca9837e92d7258c8e0c1b.jpg

Then, I made a start on covering the quarry face, and putting in some basic shaping and strata:

wCawdor-Quarry216.jpg.b05fd3b40ff13c5ed6fbc1daefb35338.jpg

Once this has dried, I can scribe in some finer detail, and then paint it all.

Thanks for looking,

Al.
