RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted October 21, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 21, 2019 Yes, very impressive, you've definitely captured the limestone look. Right, el-cheapo stuff it shall be. Then worry how to paint granite...

Well for a start, a granite quarry face would be in much sharper edged blocks than limestone. Not granite, but for Millstone Grit colouring I normally do a coat of Humbrol Matt Sand, then go over it with dilute washes of Humbrol Matt Black Green, you can see how that looks on Ladmanlow's gateposts: Cheers, Al. 11 1
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted October 21, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 21, 2019 This evening I've done a few disparate bits. I've extended the filler to the top of the incline section, and laid the curved top siding: And I've completed and painted the retaining wall between the lower and middle sidings: The coping stones are painted in Matt Sand, with a wash of Black Green, whilst the main wall has had a coat of Matt Tan for the mortar colour, followed by dry-brushing Engineers Grey and Medium Grey for the stone: Then I masked off the rail, and the side of the middle level, and filled the gap with filler - well it's what it says on the tin... Then I gave it a blast of static grass: and finally planted the wall: This all needs to dry now. Thanks for looking, Al. 11

Well, the worktop is used for cutting styrene, soldering wires, painting walls, building rock faces, all sorts of things! Oh, and preparing food occasionally, I know, I know, that's a bit controversial, but there you are. Al. RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted October 22, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 22, 2019 Oh, I'd forgotten that bit... Most of mine are in the cellar though. Although I did get some strife some years ago for cleaning a 10J diesel cylinder head in the dishwasher... Came up lovely, too... Al. 2

RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted October 22, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 22, 2019 Some more work on landscaping and ground cover this evening. First, the quarry face is gradually growing, with two more layers added: I think probably one more will do, but I'll see how it looks. Then, I worked on the ground surface on the sidings, adding some more filler at the back of the curved track, and then a sheet of cork between the lower and upper siding: This is to try and replicate the smooth slope between the two, seen in this photo: Copyright Tarmac Roadstone I'm going to try and bring the ground level to the top of the rails as seen above, so more filler will go on top of the cork when it's stuck down. This may end up being quite a heavy layout! To check that I'm getting things in proportion, I balanced the cardboard building mockups on the groceries: I might start worrying some styrene soon, to turn the mockups into reality. Allegheny1600
Hi Al, That's all coming together very nicely, well done! May I ask where you obtained your 25mm foam, please? It looks very similar to some 50mm foam I bought a while back at Wickes but they no longer stock it, Grrr! Cheers, John.
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted October 22, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 22, 2019 Hi John, thanks very much. I think it was from B&Q, bought in 1200mm x 600mm (4' x 2 ') sheets as a pack of five, I think. I've just looked on the B&Q site though and can't see them anymore. Cheers, Al.

The only 25mm polyurethane insulation that’s Wickes appears to stock now is the foil faced Kingspan I’ll do some investigation at work tomorrow and speak to a couple of contacts Edited October 22, 2019 by chuffinghell

My local Wickes does still stock the 25mm Kingspan (foil faced) but if you go onto their webshite you can order it online for home delivery if that helps? I still like using polystyrene, except for the look of horror on Sarah's face when I tread polystyrene snow through the house Chris Edited October 23, 2019 by chuffinghell 1
Allegheny1600
Thanks, Guys! That's most helpful. For once, I'm not searching for baseboard type material, I actually need to do some insulating! Cheers, John.
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted October 23, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 23, 2019 This evening I've removed the groceries to leave the surface of the yard: So the next thing is the retaining wall at the back of the yard: A sheet of Slaters' 4mm random stone cut to size, and then some 40thou styrene strip to shape the curve in it. Then another section of random stone on the back surface: In situ on the layout: Then using the same technique, another length to complete the wall: This now needs painting when the MEK has all dried. RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted October 24, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 24, 2019 This evening I did a bit of Styrene abuse. I've started the first building for the layout, the large gable ended building on the far right. I cut a basic kit of parts: two ends and two roof panels, from 40thou styrene sheet: One end section was marked out for the aperture that faces the front of the layout: and then was cut out: As I will be gluing corrugated sheet to this basic shell, I want to try and avoid any warping, so both ends were reinforced with 6mm styrene rod down the sides, and under the gable ends: Then, two 6mm beams were cut to length to brace the shell: and the two roof panels added: Then the two ends were joined together: Then, I made a start on cladding the building in corrugated sheet, using Slaters' 4mm sheets cut into individual panels approx 10 feet by 3 feet to scale. Here it is in position on the layout: That's as far as I've got tonight. Thanks for looking, Al. 11

RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted October 25, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 25, 2019 Thanks guys. Tonight, I finished cladding the structure in corrugated sheet. I used what I had left from an old sheet, and then started a new sheet of the Slaters' which is a subtly different colour plastic, as you can see from the photos. Next job is to add a thousand rivets, then I can paint it. Thanks for looking, Al. 7

RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted October 26, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 26, 2019 Finally tonight, I've painted the large retaining wall behind the sidings. Starting with an all-over coat of Humbrol Matt Tan, for the mortar colour, I then dry-brushed all sorts of different colours over the top, including various greys, brown and light green, and black and white very sparingly. This might need darkening down with an all-over wash, to make it look more grimy, however it is in a limestone quarry so it might need a top coat of white for the dust. I'm not sure yet, I'll wait until daylight before deciding. Al.
