RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 1, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2019 Then guess what turned up? The shunter asked if I wanted to hop on but I was waiting for the return trip. so on its return I headed to Davos

Across the whole week all the train staff were great, handing over my pass usually resulted in a switch to English to say thanks. Leaving the Krok behind I started a round trip via the Engadine to return to Chur. Davos lake My onward connection
Satan's Goldfish
Great to see the Krok still doing that run. One of each days highlights at Filisur was watching it run round last year from the hotel balcony. Would be nice to see it again if we can get there next year. RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 1, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2019 Bursting out into the sun at Susch. The platform extension is to cater for temporary longer trains during works on the line to Scuol (which were overrunning by a month!) so so if you wanted to go to Scuol Tarasp it was by the efficient rail replacement service I headed on to Zernez
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 1, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2019 (edited) I stopped off for a bit for more modelling reference. The Engadine was where I developed my fascination with the RhB, staying at Susch and travelling back and forth to Zernez in the 80’s 610 on a spoil train from Scuol picked up a postal container. RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 1, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2019 Not sure what this was doing but thought that’d look good on a model Another stop at Bever which is in the process of being modernised and losing its foot crossings for subways. Track layout has been rationalised at the moment but the span of the new masts suggests most are going back in again. and I headed for Samedan
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 1, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2019 Samedan is the main junction for St Moritz or the Bernina line but today I was just reversing to head back down the Albula to Filisur between Bever and the Albula tunnel Spinas, and one end of the works for the new Albula tunnel. dark bit . . . and out again at Preda

eastwestdivide
Is that Pullman nicked from the Montreux line? Or at least the same design, and far more modern than it looks.

They've carried three liveries, green/cream, red/cream (later with SOS logos) & the current ACPE blue/ cream. RMweb Premium Metropolitan H Posted October 1, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 1, 2019 (edited) I'm enjoying your pictures immensely. The last time we arrived at Filisur for a week at Hotel Grischuna - 14 May 2017 - we were greeted by the sght of 415 and 107 double-heading a special Sunday working. I am also very attracted to Wiesen - having walked ovver the viaduct a few times. But my best memories are summed up by the following picture from a RTC charter in January 2011. Hope you don't mind me diverting from your topic. Regards Chris H Edited October 1, 2019 by Metropolitan H
RMweb Premium JimFin Posted October 1, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 1, 2019 Bit of bad news - maybe as well you went on the trip now, Swiss Rail Forums are reporting that RhB Ge 6/6 I (Baby Croc.) 415 has suffered a significant failure. RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 1, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2019 Yes it was reported as failing in a cloud of smoke on Thursday. Hopefully some of the parts retained from scrapping 412 will fix her.
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 2, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 2, 2019 I was changing hotels to Filisur so had four hours to fill between check out & check in. A trip to Arosa fitted the bill nicely. A short walk to Altstadt and while I was there this old Saurer trundled by. The standard Allegra arrives with a couple of coaches in tow. Following the river out of Chur The Arosa is very steep and twisty needing all the 3490hp when hauling extra coaches or freight. Langweis and the spectacular bridge Litziruti And terminus at Arosa the coach I’d ridden was decorated inside and out for the Arosa Bear Sanctuary. It growled at you as you approached one of the 8 or 9 lineside carved wooden bears too!
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 2, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 2, 2019 I went for a wander before the return working. nice to see the Arosa livery lives on on the buses, it used to look so smart on the trains too. Arosa yard, the yellow plate on top of the point indicator tells a driver it’s set for a siding with no catenary, so diesels only. Difficult to lift off the containers with overhead in the way! So Arosa is another place retaining one of the old Tm2/2 tractors. view of the station from the yard. The Bear coach logo Immediately after leaving Arosa you pass the gravel works and not unusual to see a couple of bogie gravel hoppers on the back of a train. Returning downhill when back in Chur we enter the street running section. Had a close encounter with this builders lorry as we enter the station forecourt.
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 2, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 2, 2019 I missed the direct connection buying lunch so sat and enjoyed the action in the station. My eventual train Left it a bit close to the points causing some comment from the crew running round the Glacier Express set! As we left I saw my favourite RhB container, that could keep you supplied in ice cream for a bit Capricorn lurks behind a freight being assembled. Just past Thusis we pass under Burguine Castle Arriving over the Landwasser into Filisur
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 2, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 2, 2019 After checking in I walked back up to the station. you can just see the GEX train on the lower of the two levels climbing out up the Albula Davos shuttle at the rear and Chur service in front. I wandered round to the bridges at the viaduct end again. Track machine in the headshunt. A freight climbing uphill into the station.
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 2, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 2, 2019 (edited) It’s raining but I found a spot under the trees to keep the worst off, 415 sweeps in. Just round the corner I caught the tail of the St Moritz service entering the station. Before 415 departed for Davos Retiring to the hotel Ratia for an excellent meal, this was the view from my room up the pass. The supermarket is underneath the hotel across the road And down the pass Edited October 2, 2019 by PaulRhB
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 3, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 3, 2019 The next day was supposed to be wet again so I decide on another on train trip. It was a bit overcast travelling up the Albula but looking much better than predicted Samedan and a wait for a train as the late running Bernina Express above had significantly delayed my train. not it a bad thing for me More postal containers. Busy shunting in the yard. and then I took the shuttle to Pontresina.
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 3, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 3, 2019 Timber traffic being shunted ready for attaching to the back of passenger trains. Snow is a regular issue to deal with and this plough is attached to the front of trains when it gets too deep for the loco ploughs. An operator sits alongside the driver lifting the blades for points etc. When it gets too deep for this the big rotary machines take over.
