Hornby Class 86

Picked this up second hand at the Worthing MRC exhibition on Sunday.

Added buffer beam details, front face wire handrails, flush glazing, etched wipers, roof details and a replacement pantograph.

I will convert the loco to DCC once I retrieve my soldering iron from my friend’s shed.

Coincidentally I've also managed to pick-up a mint-in-box Hornby Virgin Trains Class 86. It's a different name and number (Josiah Wedgewood) IIRC.

I'm planning on doing it up too. I'll be designing a 3D printed kit for it (covering the underframe and roof details).

May I please know what kit you used for the flush glazing? And what pantograph did you use?

Cheers.

Hi MGR

I used SE Finecast flush glazing and a Marklin pantograph that I found on eBay a month or so ago.

The pantograph base framing is scratch built from plasticard strip sitting on the Hornby insulators.  The original Hornby pantograph must have had mazak rot as it was in bits in the box.

Cheers

Can you give me a reference number for the pantograph you used on the Freightliner Class 86?

Hi MGR.  it’s a Sommerfeldt 925.  I managed to find a few for sale on eBay a few years ago.

I think the freightliner body is on backwards.

In similar vein, I think the pantograph base is on backwards. The longer legs should be towards the cab front.

See it. Say it. Sorted.

These scrub up quite well don't they, it's the wheels and the lugs for connecting the body to the chassis that give away their age.

The basic dimensions are correct. Detail can easily be added. The wrong shape is hard to correct.

This makes them a great candidate for a detailing project.

Painted out the shiny wheel sides and picked out the cab door handrails with a chrome lining pen.

Now working on “The Manchester Guardian”  with “Sir John Betjeman” to follow.  The latter will need a cross-arm pantograph courtesy of Michael Edge (Judith Edge Kits)
