RMweb Gold Popular Post MalcT Posted October 1, 2019 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted October 1, 2019 I'm fairly new to the forum, but have spent several months following and watching various threads and I am a complete newbie to railway modelling. On my layout I want to include a dock scene with a container terminal so decided to purchase the Scalescenes container ship, This is the first kit I have built and I'm really pleased with my efforts. In total it took me about 40 hours to build. The completed model is 905mm long. The containers are pre-printed card purchased from Goodwood Scenics, just fold and glue.
RMweb Gold ianLMS Posted October 2, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 2, 2019 Very nice looking model there. Well done on your first Scalescenes kit. Look forward to see it docked on a new layout! I have several Scalescenes kits on my layout, but nothing quite as grand as yours! Ian
RMweb Gold ruggedpeak Posted October 5, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 5, 2019 That's a good sized model, looks fab :) Need a micro layout for it!
grahame
It demonstrates nice, clean and sharp modelling, especially the bridge area, not often seen on paper clad/card structures where corners are sometimes not always sharp and can look a little loose. RMweb Gold MalcT Posted October 10, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 10, 2019 This is the ship positioned in the docks. Still very early days on the layout:
KeithMacdonald
Well done! You must have a lot of patience (40 hours worth). For those of us tempted to build the same kit, can you say what parts were hardest or took the most time? Will you be adding any container handling equipment? RMweb Gold MalcT Posted October 13, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 13, 2019 Hi Keith, Thanks for your reply. I think building the bulkhead most difficult, getting the pieces correct and square, but as it was my first built kit and these were the first parts to be built maybe that's why. I also found the fitting of the stern piece needed some trimming and testing to fit ideally, The instructions are very clear to follow stating which pieces need medium or thick card. The time consuming bit is glueing the printed papers to card then cutting out the relevant pieces. Yes I will be adding handling equipment and am currently looking at the Bachmann and Kibri models. I have about built about 100 containers - 20ft and 40ft. These I bought from Goodwood Scenics - they have good variety available. MalcT
SteveyDee68
Just to say "congratulations" on your ship build! That is one monster of a card kit to tackle, especially as a first build! I have several of John's ship kits to build -- I am "cutting my teeth" on his buildings first to develop my skills before tackling them, so once again I am in awe of your results! Can't wait to see what you do next! Steve S 1
RMweb Gold MalcT Posted June 16, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 16, 2020 An update on my docks area. I've built the Kibri Container Gantry Crane and after laying the concrete hardstanding added the crane's running rails and placed in layout: Still a lot of work to do in this area
