Popular Post JeremyC
A few from my collection. Unfortunately some of the quality isn't very good because as schoolboy / engineer cadet I was at the start only able to afford 'cheap' film and didn't have a very good camera. Niddrie Landsale Yard. This was located to the East of Edinburgh and closed in December 1972. The site is now occupied by the Fort Kinnaird Shopping Centre. This was the remains of the system which had served a number of Collieries. No 19 Barclay 1244/11. This loco was the spare and was scrapped on closure of the land sale yard No. 25 Barclay 2358/54. On closure of Niddrie this engine went to Polkemmet and is now preserved in Ayrshire. Kinneil Collery Bo'ness West Lothian No. 21, Barclay 2292/51 at Kinneil Colliery, Boness around 1972. The site of this colliery is passed today by the SRPS's Boness and Kinneil Railway Kinneil No.6. AB2043/17. This locomotive is now preserved on the nearby Boness Railway. Polkemmet Collery Near Whitburn, West Lothian A feature of this colliery was the regular double headed trains up to the exchange sidings. The leading loco is No.25 from Niddrie. I took a number of photos here from 1972 to 1978. No8 AB1296/12 in 1978. At one point Polkemmet had 2 locos numbered 8. Frances Colliery This colliery was at Dysart near Kirkcaldy. No.30 was Andrew Barclay 2259/49. This was one of the long wheelbase Fife locomotives. Waterside This was a large system near Ayr. Unfortunately I arrived too late in the day to photograph very much and never managed to get back. No.17, AB1338/13 circa 1974 Comrie. This was a colliery near Oakley in Fife. Comrie Colliery No.7. W.G.Bagnall 2777/45. The locos were out of use by this time. Backworth System North of Newcastle Austerity No.6 Backworth 16 at (I think) Fenwick Colliery. montyburns56
Thanks for all of those who have highlighted locations that I was not aware of such as Falmouth Docks. I love this picture because of the contrast between the relatively modern tank wagons & the loco.
Popular Post montyburns56
These are from the Fryston/Wheldale Colliery, Normanton 1970 These say that they are from 1982, so it seems that Bickershaw wasn't the only place still using steam in the 80s! 1981 Undated. 1973 21

david.hill64
Brings back great memories for me, especially the Waterside and Polkemmet shots. RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted October 8, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 8, 2019 Even later, John Turner, 53A Models of this parish, has recently posted some pictures of an Andrew Barclay 0-4-0ST shunting Sheerness Steel PXA big box wagons at a scrapyard in Shipley in 1983. I understand the loco had been restored there and soon moved on to other sites, but it would make a good excuse for using a Hattons version on a modern image layout.

So that's three places that were still using steam into the 80s, I wonder if there are any more?
Steamport Southport
The obvious omission is Bold Colliery. Robert and Whiston were working well into the 1980s, with Robert even turning up at Rocket 150 under it's own steam by running along the mainline. http://www.8dassociation.btck.co.uk/TheLancashireCoalfield/NCBBoldColliery Jason 1 3

From 1980 1983 1982 This is from 1979, but it shows some kind of cable haulage system. Doe anyone know what it was for?

montyburns56
Comrie Colliery I can't work out if the NCB had an excess of yellow paint in the 70s or a lack of black paint? These seem to be from 1982 so perhaps someone could confirm that Comrie still used steam in the 80s? 1973 Edited October 9, 2019 by montyburns56

SouthernBlue80s
Fantastic pictures So the latest date we have a picture/proof of a working non preserved steam loco in the UK, in several locations, is 1983.
RMweb Premium drjcontroller Posted October 9, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 9, 2019 Thoroughly enjoying these uploads of industrial steam, thanks for all the pictures. The ones from Comrie in 1982 look like they were taken on 9/4/82 as I was at Comrie that day on an organised visit to see the steam and ride the branch to the exchange sidings (hence the brake van). Steam was only kept in use as a standby to an 08 hired in from BR and only steamed for special visits, like the one I was on. One of my pictures from that day https://www.flickr.com/photos/127282573@N03/30296831108/in/photolist-2ahA4yV-Naebn3

It's a little disappointing to know that it technically wasn't still in regular use back then, but thanks for the info and the picture.
avonside1563
I think the last steam that could still be classed as working industrial were the two RSH 0-4-0ST at Castle Donnington power station, they were still active well into the late 1980s. I remember going to see them at an open day and having a footplate ride with the inimitable Lionel Gadsby at the power station. This was the same year we borrowed one of the two locos for a gala at Foxfield. The power station and locos apearred in the BBC series, 'The Train Now Departing', still available on iplayer. https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p011v86f/the-train-now-departing-5-lines-of-industry 4
