jonny777
As suggested by Olddudders on the Obituary thread, I have started this new thread for the display of certain HC Casserley's photo collection which were auctioned recently. I have no idea if anyone who contributes to this forum has been successful in bidding for some of the 800 or so lots which were sold in September, but I could only afford a few. I have copied a few of the images from the Obituary thread, in order to start things off. All taken at Tilbury on 15th March 1953. 65566 44529 42529 Signal gantry near Riverside station. non vestibule coach E17332M amongst others in the Tilbury carriage sidings. jonny777
K3 2-6-0 61940 is seen at Stratford shed on 15th March 1953. This was a March loco at the time and was most likely employed on Whitemoor - Temple Mills freight services. I can't find any note of the number for the 0-6-0 behind the K3.
jonny777
F5 2-4-2T 67194 and class 11 0-6-0 12112 are pictured at Stratford shed on 13th March 1953. The diesel was only 8 months old when this photo was taken, and was allocated to Hornsey, whereas 67194 was a Stratford loco. 10

jonny777
F5 2-4-2T 67193 is seen ex-works at Stratford on 15th March 1953. This loco lasted another four and a half years until withdrawal; and by then it had seen service for just over 54 years, having been constructed in 1903. To the rear of 67193 is D16 62579 12

jonny777
Stratford line-up also on March 15th 1953. J69 68561 has J50 68967 for company, and ex-MR 1P 58062 behind. This loco was based at Plaistow at the time of the photo. 7

jonny777
Two views of Shirebrook West on 2nd September 1955. Unfortunately, at some point these two negatives appear to have come into contact with a liquid which has left permanent marks. I have tried a gentle clean with PEC-12 but to no avail. 10

woodenhead
With Shirebrook you get the impression of melancholy and wear but it is still clean and tidy. I would have expected a station in the middle of a coal field to be somewhat more dirty

jonny777
I thought this was an interesting passenger vehicle, but as I can't find the carriage number on the HCC negative list I am not sure where the photo was taken, but in the Nottingham area somewhere I suspect. This is M9691M taken in September 1955. 6
RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted October 8, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 8, 2019 The windows and trussing look like it could be L&Y origin. It's surprising how many of carriages of this vintage turn up in photos of the early 1950s. Whilst looking for interesting stuff around the Midlands I've seen pictures of an ex-LNW coach built 1899 at New Street in 1952. It was transferred to the M&GN in 1937. It was next to an NER coach. Others were from the GER, Highland and GSWR, and a non-corridor coach of GCR origin which had come to the London Midland Region via the CLC. 1
RMweb Premium uax6 Posted October 8, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 8, 2019 That is an ex L&Y vehicle. I've got the Oakwood press book on L&Y carriages at home, so I'll have a look tomorrow and see what info I can dig out. We modellers have really got to thank him for pointing his camera at stuff that wasn't just on fire.. Andy G
jonny777
Thanks Andy. This is M16884M, which according to the notes is an ex-CLC composite coach to diagram D50. Photographed at Mansfield on 3rd September 1955. I wonder how many times a year these rakes were pressed into action by the mid 1950s? Edited: to add that in tiny writing to the right of the photo description is what I believe to be a note to say this vehicle was not withdrawn until June 1960. RMweb Premium uax6 Posted October 9, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 9, 2019 Looking in the oakwood press book, that L&Y coach is to L&Y digram 140, an open corridor third, 56'x9'. 2 compartments, 2 lavs, 56 seats. 12 built in 1919-20. 9691 herself was built in 1919 to order V28, L&Y number 3307, 1st LMS no 13831, then 9691 in 1933. Withdrawn 1/56. The interesting thing is that the illustration (there aren't that many in the book) of this diagram is 9690 (withdrawn 12/55), taken by none other than HC Casserley with his neg number 88563! jonny777
That is interesting Andy, because I don't think 88563 was included in any of the groups of negatives that I bid for.
jonny777
Hasland shed on 3rd September 1955. Ex-LMS Garratt 47992 is at its home depot; but only has 6 months until withdrawal. 7

It was M9679 which had windows added in the ends and internal seating alterations apparently for use as a road learning coach. On 21st August 1954 it was stabled in No2 South bay at Birmingham New Street. Two years later it was photographed at Deganwy Edited October 9, 2019 by TheSignalEngineer Extra info added
