Yes, it does look strange, but the GER had a habit of turning level crossing kingposts through 45 degrees, so probably got the idea from that. I've got a pic somewhere, but can't find it.

The view from that spot is very different nowadays!

Btw, what is the big building on the right? It doesn't look 'GER' to me.

I don't think its a genny van, but more of a staff mess/dormitory van for use by the Power section. I'd be very surprised if there is any power in it at all, more likely just a coke stove.

I've always assume that the rectangular tanks on engineer's coaches were for holding water.

Yes you are right, I'm guessing that there might have been some sort of washing facilities in the vehicle, or its just for the copious amount of tea that would be consumed during the times between work breaks....

My understanding is that Dukinfield gave up railway repairs in 1939, which is when all their stock was transferred away.

New build stopped in 1939. MoS took it over then aaccording to Hansard sold it back to LNER c1946. Not sure what was done there after that. MV had a factory around there until 1960s

This looks like a gem which has been very lucky to survive as long as it has.

6-wheeled 51842 was once the Colchester Tool Van, according to the stencilling on its side. 24th August 1957.

More of a gem than you realised. This is an ex-LD&EC brake third, so a bit of a rarity.

It appears as though the bracket signal controls access towards Stratford Market for both lines, and the doll on the right is at about 45 degrees to the one on the left, something I can't remember seeing elsewhere.

The idea was to have the signal arms at right angles to the track for sighting purposes.  The co-acting home signal on the Framlingham branch at Wickham Market Junction had the upper arm at 45 degrees to the lower so it could be seen from some distance away around the sharp curve of the line.  This was set by a triangular wooden block attached to the post.

Neither is this practice is restricted to semaphores.  Here is CA 494 and you can see that the signal head is not in line with the ladder and baseplate.  Again, this is set for sighting purposes around the curve of the track.

The above photograph is very interesting as I'm building a model of Colchester c1955, and the following notes provided by John Watling, may be of interest.

The vehicles used with the Colchester breakdown train were as follows:

LNER Period

Tool Van 961515 ex GE 264 diagram 219 formerly EX16, built 2/1886, converted 12/1928, withdrawn 11/1942

Mess and Tool Van 961520 ex GE 718, LNER 6460, diagram 518, built 9/1896, converted 2/1940, withdrawn c. 1945

Early BR Period

Packing Van 961520 ex GE 945 brake third 62332, diagram 533, converted 3/1947, no withdrawal date.

Tool Van 961515 ex 51842 34’ brake third, built Ashbury 1896, converted 10/1945, withdrawn 8/11/1958 GER 6 wheel

961520 GER 6-wheel Mess and Tool Van ex GE 945 brake third 62332, diagram 533, converted 3/1947, no withdrawal date

961604 GNR crane

961568 GER ex double bolster

Apparently the GNR crane was rarely used from the mid 1940's onwards and I was given the impression it was in poor condition and reluctant to steam. It went during 1955, or perhaps a little earlier and to find it at Stratford four or five years later was most surprising but it disappeared soon after. There are photos of the crane at Stratford dated 20 December 1959.

Post c1955

After the steam crane had gone two carriages appeared:

320380, a former GER 10 compartment suburban 3rd, LNER 60396

320147 an ex GCR 50ft clerestory, LNER 583 built in 1904.

Thanks Chris and Paul. It is amazing what fascinating information can be discovered from a couple of photographs.

Here is a photograph of 51842 taken from the other end with the 961515 number visible.

I suspect that E441E is another pre-grouping vehicle, although I do not have the reference library needed to look it up. Given the Gresley look to the carriage I would guess ex-GNR, but wouldn't put money on it.

I'd agree with your assessment of it being of GNR origin.

I acquired 9 Lots totalling some 900+ negatives at the Auction which I have just started scanning as it took some time for them to be boxed up and posted and I have also been away at various Gala's. All will eventually appear on my Flickr site:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/irishswissernie/

Areas covered, Isle of Wight (Bembridge & St Helens on Flickr) GNRI Fermanagh, Sligo Leitrim & Northern Counties, Waterford & Tramore, Cork - Clonakilty, Waterford-Limerick Junction, Callender & Oban, Fort William -Mallaig. Kyle of Lochalsh, The Mound, Dornoch branch. Polmadie , Eastfield. Carlisle sheds , Cumbria WCML to Oxenholme, some Settle & Carlisle. Isle of Man 1950.

Some of the negs need a lot of cleaning up whilst others are basically sound.

Half the Collection was auctioned last month with the remainder being auctioned next year sometime.

This lot should keep me busy for the Winter.

Could you put them on here as well as in your flicker account please? That way we can continue the interesting discussion around the images too.

Two views of Shirebrook West on 2nd September 1955. Unfortunately, at some point these two negatives appear to have come into contact with a liquid which has left permanent marks. I have tried a gentle clean with PEC-12 but to no avail.

Just found this thread,  fantastic thanks for sharing.

This is and interesting picture,  it shows when the connections to the LDECR were removed the downside one was later reinstated for access to WH Davis

Thanks very much Ernie. I hope that scanning your investment has the same rather profound effect on you as it is having on me.

After a while, I begin to feel that I am there with the great man as he was taking the photographs. Either that, or he is there with me as I look at the scan results.

Either way, I am very proud to own a few hundred of these excellent images and my only regret is that I could not afford more.

Here is Custom House station on 24th August 1957.

I've just added 3 views of ex HR Clan Goods 57955 at Kyle of Lochalsh 22 Apr 1952 to Flickr:

1952-04-22 HR Kyle of Lochalsh, 57955 HC Casserley img614

One of my favourite locos! I had a couple of built Jidenco  00 etched brass kits probably 30 years ago one with the straight splasher as 57955 and one with the split splashers (straight over the first 2 drivers and curved over the last )

They ran like a "bag of spanners"!

Wish I still had them

Now must get back to scanning/cleaning ; Callender & Oban today.
