I've just added 3 views of ex HR Clan Goods 57955 at Kyle of Lochalsh 22 Apr 1952 to Flickr:

One of my favourite locos! I had a couple of built Jidenco  00 etched brass kits probably 30 years ago one with the straight splasher as 57955 and one with the split splashers (straight over the first 2 drivers and curved over the last )

They ran like a "bag of spanners"!

Wish I still had them

Now must get back to scanning/cleaning ; Callender & Oban today.

Ernie

What a cracking shot, so sharp and full of detail. I particularly like that plough she is carrying, it’s not the traditional HR wooden hook mounted plough, but one with steel blades, a BR version perhaps? Also note that stacked LMS dod in the foreground.

Many thanks for putting them up here, they are wonderful!

I too have a Jidenco version of this in the build pile, I occasionally get it out, look at it, see the frames and then put it away again in horror!

LIke the Claughtons, a representative of that short era when it was thought  unseemly to fully expose Walschaerts valve gear to public view.

Another from Beckton Gas Works.

No.4 is under repair at the works' shops.

It was a devil of a job scanning this in order to get the brightness/contrast right, but preserve the internal detail. I suppose we should be thankful that the photo was attempted at all.

2F 0-6-0T 27513 is at Devons Road Bow on 4th May 1950. The loco was constructed just down the road, and so must have felt quite at home. A BR number of 58854 was allocated a few weeks after this photo was taken, although 'Gladstone' seems to be the unofficial name. Withdrawal would not come for another 6 years, allowing the loco to reach the milestone of 65 years working service.

Drummond 4-4-0 no 384 of 1902 vintage is seen at Feltham on 18th March 1950.

A tender swap with withdrawn 385 seems to have taken place, which might have posed a problem for the local spotters. Although 384 did not last much longer, being withdrawn just over a year later.

I have noticed that image quality on these 1950 negatives is somewhat inferior to those from later years, which is probably due to the unavailability of high quality film material in the immediate post-war years, although it may just be that it was a dull day.

I apologise for the horizontal line which appears across the image on some of these scans. It is a fault on my scanner, but it does double as a unremovable watermark for my online posts.

The cut down locos (built by Nielson?) were for use in the retort house, I believe, where there was limited clearance. One was recently for sale – a snip at £40,000.

Great set of photos. Thank you for posting. When and where were they auctioned and how can I find out about the next lot, please?

Great Western Railway Auctions were the auctioneers -

Kentish Town on 25th February 1950.

Johnson 1F 0-6-0T no 1661 stands looking rather forlorn. However, you might be forgiven for thinking that it's

next trip would be to the cutter's torch; but this loco journeyed north after about another year, spending time at various sheds such as Normanton and Goole, and finally was withdrawn in July 1959 after giving 81 years service.

I don't wish to detract from the wonderful pictures of Mr. Casserley, but I found the video below which neatly links with the above image.
