CLASS 08 VARIATIONS

Was going to get one of my Class 08's renumbered then noticed it only had one 'equipment box' on the left solebar where the one I was going portray had two.

After a quick search on the internet it then became evident there are few variations, some had one box on one side and two on the other, others seemed to have two each side and some even had three.

Anyone any idea if these details are per a particular numbering/batch sequence.

Was it after some mods', airbrake and or electric fuel pump addition ????? 

Thought this was going to be pretty straightforward but obviously not.

Any info appreciated.

08s are a minefield for the reasons mentioned already and so too details such as lights, lamp brackets, door hinges, wooden vs metal cab doors... the list goes on.  The info below should be helpful, although should not be assumed to be exhaustive.  The key is to check and double check with photographs of the actual prototype that you choose to model as it was at a specific time.  I also have a complete fleet list with many more details which I'm pretty sure can be found online quite easily, but could always forward to you if you so wish...

 

Class 08 variations

Bonnet Access Doors

 

Long Hinges were fitted up to 08266 (D3336) & 08369 (D3454) to 08387 (D3472).

Short Vertical Handles were fitted to 08177 (D3245) onwards.

 

 

Cab Doors

 

Wooden Cab Doors were fitted up to 08704 (D3871).

Steel Cab Doors were fitted from 08705 (D3872) onwards.

 

 

Cab Droplights

 

Wooden Droplights were fitted up to

08101 (D3136) & 08149 (D3217) to 08156 (D3224)

 

Steel Droplights were fitted to:

08102 (D3137) to 08148 (D3216) & 08157 (D3225) to 08958 (D4192)

 

 

Cabinets

 

All Locomotives fitted from new with Vacuum Exhauster Cabinet on LHS.

The following Locomotives also had an identical Cabinet on RHS:

 

08001 (D3004) to 08176 (D3244)

08545 (D3709) to 08560 (D3727)

08571 (D3738) to 08595 (D3762)

08606 (D3773) to 08639 (D3806)

08656 (D3823) to 08958 (D4192)

 

The following Locomotives were built without the RHS Cabinet although

some may have had them fitted when later Dual / Air Braked:

 

08177 (D3245) to 08544 (D3708)

08561 (D3728) to 08570 (D3737)

08596 (D3763) to 08605 (D3772)

08640 (D3807) to 08655 (D3822)

 

 

Air / Dual Braking

 

Locomotives fitted with Air / Dual Brakes (fitting commenced in 1968) had an additional box for an Air Compressor fitted between the Cab and the Battery Box on the LHS only.

 

 

Running Plate

 

Up to 08698 (D3865) the running plate had a lip at the top and a fillet that projects downwards at the rear end of the running plate to the buffer beam, 08699 (D3866) onwards did not have either feature, the running plates were plain and had no fillet to the rear buffer beam.

The last few had longer handrails by the cab doors. There was three different conduit runs for the lights on the rear of the cabs before the post 1976 when headcodes were discontinued. 

 

It is so easy to get things wrong, like the Dapol 0 gauge model has the wrong conduit run for a loco with visible hinged engine room doors with the small handrails on.

Hi Russ

 

They had empty boxes. I was on the understanding they were all early withdrawals and were never fitted with train brakes.

 

As for other visual variations, after the removal of the ladders each region seemed to have its own idea on how the handrails for the shunter to hang on to would be arranged. As for a human shunter riding on the front steps the deflectors on the lower part of the radiator so the warm air wasn't blasted into his face, these were added retrospectively to early machines later ones had them fitted from new.

 

Some had electric pumps for priming the fuel when starting the engine, most had hand pumps, I am sure Russ with his experience would be able to enlighten us more on this.

 

There were two designs of lifting holes in the buffer beams, most had two T shaped ones but some for Horwich ( I believe) had two rectangular shaped slots.  Over the years there have been some changes to buffers, when built they had standard steam loco buffers, some later had hydraulic buffers. A few had large head buffers for operational reasons and one at Colchester had oval buffers.

 

At least one of the Crossley engined locos had pressed steel engine room doors with a defined X on them, as photos of these are very rare I am not sure if any others did. While on the subject of the Crossley machines they appear to have a small chimney type exhaust.

 

I had gone through all my books and trawled the internet for photos of Standard Shunters in service and noted things like hand rails , buffers, lights etc all on a floppy disc (remember them) and lost the whole lot when Mrs M tidied up what we couldn't use anymore.

Thanks for that Clive,  the only electric oil priming pumps I've come across are post privatisation ones with a switch in the cab

The early 08s had hand lubricated oil priming pumps in the cab the same as an 11 but most were in the nose end. Trouble was if you were on your own and primed the system by the time you got back to the cab to start the engine it had lost its pressure 

One of the greatest things fitted to 08s was the electric fuel lift pump these started to get fitted to them in the mid 80s as part of a cab upgrade kit sent to depots for fitting.  The kit also included better insulation and heating equipment

With regards to train braking equipment,  it was very rare in the north east for it to be used always amazed me how money was spent on air braking when in the 80s was rarely used at my depot its only  really since privatisation that the equipment has come into it's own as the industry has moved away from loose shunting. 

I'm surprised more weren't built without train braking

I produced a (hopefully) comprehensive listing of the original condition in which each standard 350hp diesel shunter (later classes 08 and 09) was outshopped - and when. Generally, it doesn't cover later changes but it does enable one to understand the original appearance of each loco in this large class.

Most Air only 350s didn't have the additional cabinet on the LHS as the compressor was fitted in the exhauster cabinet. One odd ball was 08440 which for some reason gained a RH side exhauster cabinet in which was fitted a second compressor with the one underneath having been removed.

All ways remember when doing my traction conversion to 08s from basic driver training....the instructor driver proudly said....in hear is compressor...opens cupboard....no compressor just a birds nest....08s equipment could be any where....don't forget 90volt battery and 110volt batteries combo.....
