Afternoon,

Hope you're all still coping ok. I've managed to do little bits on the layout inbetween shifts and home schooling.

I've also bought a few bits of rolling stock for the layout and for use on a little side project that im planning. They haven't  arrived yet, but no doubt will when I'm at work..

I know its getting a bit samey, but I'll leave you with yet another photo from the depot. The sun was shining and I thought it looked quite natural.

I wont post anymore of this area for a bit now, promise.

Post up as much Colas as you like Scott:good:

:) If it’s enough to inspire a photo we are likely to enjoy it too.
90% of my photos at work are the same spot as I just grab an interesting train so it’s no different in mini worlds ;)

I like the livery too, my reasoning behind having it is that Arlington saved it from the scrap yard. ^_^

Morning,

Just thought I'd touch in with you and keep the thread alive.

Things have been progressing at a slow pace, but at least it's progressing.

Layout update

With the small depot at the end of Fiddle yard 1 pretty much completed, I've turned to the much larger fiddle yard 2. The sidings for the dock/freight branch have been started, I hope to fit 4 in, and then another 4/5 for the rest of the world.

I'm also incorporating a Freightliner depot into the layout, which will be for loco and wagon maintenance,  I'm starting to build my collection of container wagons and although the port container terminal serves all TOC's, FL have the monopoly which is why there,s more of a presence.

The other locos are able to use the satellite refuelling/stabling point nearer the station.

Fleet News

The latest loco to arrive is 08624 in FL livery, soon to be moved by road to Leeds to visit Richard at Roads-and-Rails for some specialist treatment.

I also have the Pink Panther Hattons 66 on order, to add a splash of colour!

Plans

The layout has been based in the S.Wales area for a while now, but as it develops and changes and the focus is turning towards container traffic  I'm thinking maybe I should move the location back down South, and I'm even looking at 3rd rail.

Although I'm not sure how well 3rd rail works with code 75?

For those that remember I used to have a layout called Redbrook Maritime, and this was supposedly set in the Southampton area. Which is great for me as research is so much easier as its only a 30 mins drive away, so it seems to make sense to move it.

I just need to think about what I'm going to do with the steel wagons I have on order from Cavalex and Accurascale!

Thanks for having a read through and as always, views are welcome. I'll leave you with a picture of the latest member of the team.

Cheers
Scott

Well you could reinstate the Poole steel or a flow to the West Docks to justify some steel or have it swap locations every now and then.
If you do third rail it’ll look fine with code 75, just mock up a bit of code 75 spare rail as a test as it’ll tell you what it looks like as 0.1mm different to code 80.

Heights
code 100 is 2.54mm

code 80 - 2mm

code 75 - 1.9mm

With there being a daily Intermodal to Barry Docks for a couple of years operated by DB & FL. Couldn’t  you not keep what you have with the South Wales theme but just add a new Container flow to go alongside your Steel traffic.

Thanks Paul, I have laid a piece of track along with the 3rd rail as a tester and after experiencing that frustration, Nigel's suggestion may be the preferred option!    Thanks Nigel, I didn't know about the Barry Island workings... :D

Another Barry Docks Intermodal at Cardiff Central (this time DB).  They do seem to run these rakes with a lot of wagons without containers, I suppose it’s due to demand at the dockside. A good chance to show of some of the intricate detailing on model wagons that is normally hidden by a box.

If it’s the Barry docks one, it doesn’t have anything to do with ships - it’s going to the sprawling chemical works there that makes ,,,er,,, chemically stuff.

Used to be DB, now Freightliner.

a fella on here made an excellent rendition of the chemical works, but the name of the layout slips my memory.

IIRC he had to change the name as the owners of the plant got their knickers in a bunch about it

Evening,

The layout is surprisingly still surviving. I've come close to down sizing but have stuck it out.

Supplies are still limited which means I spend more time thinking about what ifs, and thats not a good thing when you have so many ideas.

Anyway, the focus still seems to be on the container industry. I'm looking forward to cracking on with the small Freightliner depot. Which brings me onto the latest additions to the fleet. Two Hornby KFA'S.

Just need some FL 66's on the roster now!

Evening,

In between work and home schooling, work continues on the Freightliner run Redbrook Maritme Maintenance Depot. (RMMD)

I have been playing around with track plan ideas, and my usual option would be to fit as much as I can In.

However I'm trying to be good and have opted  to just have 2 lines which go through the depot. The idea being that the part of the depot thats visible is the rear end, and any sidings will be at the front of the depot (off scene)

I'll try and post some pictures tomorrow so you get a better idea.

Apologies for the quality, but here's an aerial view of the track plan on the depot side.

Rear two lines are the up and down. then the two roads for the depot and then the Dock branch line.

The plan was to solder the FY and depot wires, however my soldering iron isn't getting hot, despite the power light being on. So I guess that's something else to add to the shopping list.

Clearly there's still plenty to do, when time and funds allow.

Evening,

Just a quick update on this weekends project.

The inspection pit from KS laser designs has been built, painted and fitted.

20200607_211949.jpg.0482c6765a3646686350ba2549871240.jpg

Makes a change from the Peco one and is plenty long enough to accommodate a large loco or wagon.

Modelled here by a DB 66 as I dont actually have any FL ones!

20200607_211924.jpg.a4c61d773f9d93a56613bb8f40f8846c.jpg

I have fitted lights to it, although not tested! and it will eventually have safety barriers around it and all the usual clutter.

Cheers

Scott

Evening,

A brief update on progress on the Freightliner depot.

The depot building is coming along ok, still needs a bit more doing to it but its looking better than when it was just a laser cut shell.

A couple of things are niggling me with it:

  • The join at the front where the corrugated sheets meet. which I guess I can fill  somehow?
  • The Sky lights which I just couldn't cut square enough so they they fit flush with the roof. So I've fitted them from the bottom. But would this ever happen? I just need one example in the real world and I'll be happy!    I'm trying to work out what happens to the rain, I don't want a roof full of paddling pools..

The hard standing is down, and gradually being weathered as I go, I've also done the ballasting for the depot and branch line. I've painted the rail sides on the mainline, but yet to tackle the ballasting there as I need to sort out cable trunking and associated trackside bits.

I'm also unsure about what to do behind the mainline. I'm not very creative when it comes to the scenic's, so its the usual options of embankment or low relief industrial buildings. So I'm open to ideas that will be within my capabilities. I was thinking of a small rail served industry. like  the scrap yard I had on an earlier version of the layout, but I just don't think there's enough room to do it convincingly.

That's about it for the time being on that part. As for the other side, I'm having that feeling again where the bulldozers move in and redesign the trackplan, but I'll save that update for a rainy day!
