GBRf Class 69 Project

Interesting little snippet in tonight's Railway Herald magazine that says the prime mover (the engine) for the first Class 69 - 69001 (formerly a Class 56) - has been delivered from EMD to Stoke and that the project is on target to commence testing in May next year - with the first tests being undertaken on a preserved railway.

Which 56 is the recipient?

I don't think they've announced it yet.  There are two or three (I believe) going through Stoke, all of which require varying degrees of work, and the one to be numbered 69001, will be the first one that is complete and outshopped, rather than a specific donor, as I understand it - that was the last info that a good source at GBRf gave me.

I was in the shed the other week, the first batch of class 56s that will become 69s are sat inside in primer, nothing changed externally at this early stage, I was hoping to see one with the new cab interior in place but again nothing to see yet

I’m quite reliably informed that even though 56128 is ex Booth’s and heavily stripped, it’s body shell is in very good condition because when it was stored on the Nene Valley Railway prior to being sold on, it was largely kept in the tunnel and free from the elements.

Assuming that 69 001 is the first, 56 311 (if you believe Wikipedia).

56031 and 56311 have been stripped of everything and then sent to Marcroft for sandblasting, any bodyside repairs, primed, returned to EMD and put on accommodation bogies.  I’m sure EMD are just doing the final tweaks before commencing work.

I'd have thought class 58s would be better as they are trying to make them similar to 66s

Strange that so few of the 58s have actually been scrapped, considering how long they have been out of service.

Still looks a better donor vehicle than a 56

Perhaps the new prime mover is too wide to comfortably fit in a 58. Also those access panels may not be convenient or suitable.

Talking of 58s the one that matters that is overseas is 58050 as it is earmarked for the national collection. Not seen anything on its status for a long time.

The GM engine is narrower than the EE one in a 57 there is loads of room whereas in a 56 which is basically the same body its tight.

Apparently they are fitting PBL brakes to the 69 where the 58 already has them.

The 66 cab is based on the 58 one even sharing the same windscreens so you would think be a lot less work for them

Had wondered whether they will get PBL brake controls. Makes a lot of sense. Do they also get the EMD control stand ? Maybe like in the DVT cabs?

I can see some interesting conversations coming up in a few years time, “ yes I got my first 69 today”

The lads at Downpatrick have already got their first 69.  ;)

Iv been told there is a pic of a power unit being lowered into a 56 shell  (guessing its on wnxx)

Anyone know what sort of time frames these rebuilds may take?

Cheers

James

Mainline testing is supposed to start in June, 2020.

Looks like the older generation Indian Railway HHPDEMU powercars

This is one of Northern Ireland Railways' 80 class Diesel Electric Multiple Units built in 1973 so the timescale is similar. It is based on the British Railways Mk2 coaches. Out of interest have you any pics of a HHPDEMU for comparison?
