Siphon208
Evening all! Been a while since I've been on here- I seem to recall a photo of a black 5 awaiting departure from Levers sidings at Port sunlight= does anyone recall this pic? I'm sure its been on here. LMS2968
Are you thinking of this? Not a Black Five but a Stanier Crab on Class H vans in 1957. I believe it was in Lever Bros' house magazine.
Phil Traxson
Just a point of interest the loco is not a "Crab" but a Stanier 2-6-0. Apart from the number, Crabs start 42700 onwards, the immediate giveaways are horizontal cylinders and no step up in the running plate over the cylinders. From a sad old trainspotter. LMS2968
They were often referred to as Stanier Crabs by enginemen, since they did exactly the same work as the earlier Horwich Crabs..
Siphon208
Thanks for posting- great picture (hadn't seen this one before!) The photo I had was of a black 5 in that very same siding- backed up in the dispatch siding. Was taken about '65. The loco has the diagonal white stripe on the cab, and Overhead cables warning tags on the cab and boiler
LMS2968
I hate to mention this, but if it had the diagonal YELLOW stripe on the cabside, it wasn't a Black Five: none of them got these. The 5XP Jubilees did, though, as did one 8F. Yes, I like the photo too!
rogerzilla
My grandmother lived in Port Sunlight backing onto the line. She used to go nuts about the "Mickeys" leaving smuts all over her washing when it was on the line.
LMS2968
Perhaps they first provided the smuts, then provided the washing powder!
billy_anorak59
Dave Marks' Flickr page has a few showing Port Sunlight exchange sidings - some great shots elsewhere on the Chester-Birkenhead too, but no yellow stripes.
