Nimbus
Timely post - I was just about to search RTT myself. The tour sold out within 48 hours apparently, well before I'd even heard about it. I'll get out for some photos though. It may have been this set I saw parked in the south end sidings at Hornsey last Thursday, but unfortunately masked by an adjacent 365. Meanwhile Ferme Park opposite has been cluttered with redundant Caledonian Sleeper stock, with 86101 in attendance, for over a week. Would have been nice to 'top and tail' the 313 era, as I was on The Inter-Suburban tour at the end of Cravens Class 105 rule, and then used the first morning of 313 service to get to work in WGC. Everyone whispering, unaccustomed to the possibility of their conversations being overheard! Still detest the 7xx's. Just one more grey thing to contribute to the current grey British mood, with a teeth rattling ride quality. The Nim. 2
woodenhead
No catering, no toilets and 43 year old units about to be retired. Its bad enough when you turn up at your station and it's Mark 1s plus 90+ year old steam engine called Flying whatever. Whatever is the tour market turning to?
Rivercider
On one of my spotting trips I saw some of the new class 313s, before they entered service in late 1976. They were quite a change from what had gone before, though it is not a class of unit I have travelled in much. Here is a faded instamatic snap of 313021/025/007/016 outside Hornsey depot . 9/10/76 cheers
woodenhead
I remember going to KX early in my spotting days, seeing the 312s and these odd looking new 313s.
RMweb Premium John M Upton Posted October 19, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 19, 2019 There was a fairly substantial rumour that one or two retired GN 313's were to head south to the Sussex Coast to boost the Southern ones. If it still happening I am wondering what are the chances of seeing NSE livery on the Coastway West once more? 1

Crikey, my mental image of a 313 is a mobile toilet ankle deep in food. What has the world come to? One of those trains I'd like to see RTR but have yet to get that hazy glow of nostalgia for.
RMweb Premium John M Upton Posted October 19, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 19, 2019 It's coming RTR in N scale in 2020 apparently. That announcement put a proverbial cat among the pigeons of my future modelling plans...
RMweb Premium 5944 Posted October 20, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 20, 2019 Only the London end vehicle of 313064 has been vinyled in NSE livery. It also has a headboard attached. The country end coach has only the front repainted, and the middle coach has a white lower body side with a slogan on it. 313134 hasn't been touched yet as far as I know.

Both ex-Clacton units too. 008, 033,034 & 035 were based there in the early 80s before being replaced by 308s which they replaced in the first place. 061-064 were transferred over a few years later before being renumbered 096-099 then returning to 061-064 when they headed back to London. 098 was the only one of these which carried NSE livery. I think it was 063 when it crashed into the toilet building in Walton-on-the-Naze, emerging as 098 in NSE after its repair. I believe its damaged carriage was replaced rather than repaired. One on the offside of the south end cab too. All cabs had been treated to fresh paint. Caught up with the tour at Hertford North where there was a fair enthusiast and staff presence. Had hoped to record it and its characteristic wheel-flats subsequently rattling through Bayford, but was thwarted first by traffic, then a road closure The Nim. Sadly the ones which migrated to the Sussex coast could see at least five more years service there. If nothing else they support the area’s nickname of Costa geriatrica where both trains and population are among the oldest still in operation. They were dreadful in 1976 and haven’t improved with age.

To be honest the ones with the high back seats are quite comfortable, certainly far more comfortable than those new white things with ironing boards instead of seats
RMweb Premium John M Upton Posted October 23, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 23, 2019 Also the Sussex Coast ones keep a proper fully safety critical guard on board and I have a full PTS Licence in my pocket to prove it!

Prospect of a competent comfy suspension and relatively comfy seat, and free from a cacophony of bleeps and repetitive announcements by that woman. She seems to follow me into supermarkets and WHS too. I preferred the few low-back seated sets as the high backs were set to induce a hunched posture. The 313s window seats were free of that trunking which forces one to sit skew or cross-legged for the entire journey, and provided a handy horizontal handrail on the luggage racks to enable one to extricate oneself from the window seat in crowded conditions under braking for one's stop.
