What's on your 3mm workbench

The Black 5 as it is at the moment.  The rear area under the cab needs a false frame extension adding to fill the openness. There is a slight modification I want to try on the opposite side when I start the insulated sides. At the moment I am in two minds about the front coupling to leave or remove, these locos were seen odd times tender first as well as shunting makes me think about leaving the coupling on.

The 8F is unusual as the kit came with white metal smokebox, boiler, and firebox but footplate, cab and tender thin etched brass. It also had very thin etches for the smokebox, boiler and firebox for people wanting to do just a brass one. As I wanted a heavy body I shaped these 3 parts, filed off the detail on the castings and fitted the brass to the white metal. This gave a good body detail but quite heavy and prevented the parts being bent or distorted. The whitemetal firebox did need a little grinding so the XT60 would fit and has come out quite nicely. I have the other side valve gear to fit and then awaiting the smokebox number plate before varnishing.

Quite.  I was looking through my nameplate stash and given recent events when I saw Eddie eight I just thought "oooh yes, it has to be that one..."  ;)

I have @Robert Shrives of this parish to thank for kickstarting me with this one;

A bit of background first, it's a Worsley Works BR class 08 shunter kit with etched brass body and etched nickel-silver chassis. Mashima motor, Branchlines 50:1 gearbox and Romford wheels. The crank axles were a bit of a challenge but the chassis went together without too much fuss.

The body also went together neatly

At this stage it ran smoothly and free-running at low speeds as I'd loaded as many flywheels as would fit inside the body and as much lead as would fit between the frames.

Along the way I'd overcome several challenges (mainly my shonky soldering) and was close to final assembly, transfers, varnish and glazing - when I moved house and lost the cab roof.

I had always believed that I just put it in the wrong box when packing up my workbench and that it would turn up again some day, but years went by without it resurfacing. I had a stab at fabricating a replacement, which looked awful, so the loco ended up being pushed to the back of the cupboard.

<fast forward> So a few weeks back I was discussing this with Robert and he said "I would copy the Tri-ang body cab roof - or even cut and fit the plastic one." <Lightbulb moment>

D'oh! Egad! Why on earth did this not occur to me years ago?! It's just so blinkin' obvious.

So following the purchase of a damaged Tri-ang 08 bodyshell from 3mm Society spares for £3 and a little bit of cutting and filing;

Thanks Robert! :^)

So finally we can now progress to some Railtec transfers

Even though the cab roof is not a perfect fit and looks slightly out of kilter it's close enough for me and there's now a very good chance that I'll probably actually get the loco finished this time. :^)

Are those extended axles that you've used and Romford wheels, Pete ? If so can you remember where you got them from as I've heard of them mentioned or quoted but I've never actually seen any for sale.

I have a chassis that is long overdue building.

Regards,

Ian.

Ian, yes indeed Romford wheels and using the extended axles bought from 3SMR, code RAX1 on this page https://www.3smr.co.uk/wheelstock.html

I remember that there was a crushing sense of finality "you'd better have got this right" when fitting the cranks and con rods as the axle ends have to be filed off, meaning the wheels are now irreversably fitted, and you cant fully test the chassis with the con rods in place before the ends have been filed off... I procrastinated for days. :^)

As far as I know Ian, Markits sell them too, mine came from eBay though.

One of my Gem A4's has just had its first run and to complement it the Tourist stock was used. The tender for these had two main faults as a running loco, these being brittle plastic wheels that the axle ends easily broke off, and, due to the corridor gangway a Tri-ang coupling would not work properly. I made an internal chassis for metal wheels (yes I know they should be disc) and a coupling mount that repositioned the coupling about 1mm further away which now works well.

Here we are, my more or less finished, pseudo Hudswell Clarke 0-4-0DM.

_20210521_120319.JPG.0d7aa29e0092060a8993cbad2181f555.JPG

Couplings, larger buffer heads and matt varnish still to be added.

Mike

With the drier weather, a chance to apply matt varnish without getting white 'blooms' of water vapour locked in.

That's the Hudswell just about done now, just need to be brave enough to pierce the buffer beams for couplings.

Don't forget Lenny and Martin Olley are doing a RTR railbus for sale to the general public in November at the Warley show. Also there is possibly a RTR B17 from George Mitcheson of which I have seen the prototype running.

Here are  my "Tri-ang" 8F and SR class Z locos.  These are probably society body kits (I bought second hand a long time ago) and I discarded the chassis's as I wanted my own fitted with Tri-ang Jinty wheels and XT60 motors along with Tri-ang style valve gear.  They have turned out and run well although the 8F is now awaiting a numberplate before varnishing.

Martin Olley posted a statement on the 3mm E group recently that they intend to have 10 AC raicars and 10 Wickham railcars available for general sale from his Uppingham layout at Warley in November.

Spec is r-t-r 12mm gauge, painted and flush glazed with a price tag in the region of £120. Depending on the success of these then they may offer other railbuses and possibly a DMU.

Ian.

Time to return to the workbench.

The 3mm section is currently very busy with a carriage building exercise, the aim being to complete the seven etches I had in stages from folded up to still lying in the flatpack drawer. Today three have returned from the paint shop in the shed with the main external livery applied. The next stage is to bring the remaining four to the painting stage and take them out to the workbench in the shed where the airbrush is set up. And to do that before the real winter sets in.
