Bachmann 105 dmu speaker placement

Hello all.

I'm hoping to fit sound to a class 105 dmu (still making up my mind over ESU v Zimo chips) but am getting a bit worried about locating the speaker. I have seen the Paul Chetter guide for the 108 from 2013 Hornby mag but it looks like the internal architecture of the two classes is quite different. Would be very grateful for any advice or examples of how you have fitted your speakers to the class 105.

Many thanks

Chris

Hi Chris,

This is how I did my 105. Used a Zimo MX645 from Digitrains loaded with an activedrive file and a Zimo sugar cube.

There isn't much room in the motor casting to fit a decoder. The first pic shows the Zimo MX600 originally fitted - just. So I had to trim back the lighting unit to allow enough room for the MX645 to sit on the top. After insulating the speaker with some masking tape it was fitted up against the front of the motor casing with the supplied 470ohm capacitor sitting at it's side, (for some stay-alive capacity, the 645 having on-board circuitry for this - why I prefer them where they will fit). Once given some matt black paint nothing shows and the sound output is decent enough

for me.

Chris,

I fitted one of Richard's roads-and-rails small iPhone speakers under the chassis, you just need to remove the small air cylinder and glue the speaker on.  No need to drill through for the wires - I used the hole which the air cylinder was fitted into.  I then threaded the wires under the seats along to the decoder (an ESU Loksound micro fitted with Wheeltappers 105 sound).

I'm very pleased with the set up - I found that the speaker is perfect for the sound, and enhances the nice "rasp" on the Wheeltappers project. It's nice having the sound coming from under the floor of the DMBS.

Here's a YouTube of my units:

That sounds really good, thanks for the video. Is the decoder in the recess on top of the motor housing ?

Chris

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you Chris.

The micro decoder sits on top of the chassis block - even the micro decoder won't fit into the recess;  you just need to cut a piece out of the glazing for the body to sit back down nicely.  Neil from Wheeltappers sounds, whose sound projects I have fitted to my DMUs, was helpful and told me how to do this.

Thank you. Does the clear plastic come out to be trimmed or do you need to do it in situ ?

Sorry for lots of questions

Chris

Chris - just to confirm Richard's response.

It comes out easily as it's just fixed in with two screws, one at each end.  Fortunately there was no glue used and the perspex strip is a separate moulding to the side windows.

Please let us know how you get on.  I'd be interested to know which sound project you decide upon for your 105.

Cheers.

Thanks for that - currently leaning towards Youchoos as they have a good basic project plus variety of station announcements - which means play value for me and I am a simple soul and thus easily entertained.

Thanks
