I agree with what's been said about the Parkside Grampus, I'm currently building two as a recent convert to 7mm following taking over ownership of a layout. Like Rob these are the first 7mm wagons I have built and I found them much easier for my fat fingers to put together than the 4mm version, of which I've built many.

It's a shame they don't include vac brake gear as the kit represents the unfitted wagon, mine will be vac brakes so I'll need to source the components.

Cheers,

Wayne

Hi Wayne, sounds like you have a great project to put some vac equipment on them. I realised I haven't posted a photo of the completed Grampus wagon so will take some later on this week.

I've BADLY built my two Grampus but left off the Baskets and haven't worried about the Brake bit yet, but I made a complete hash of the Transfers as one kit was very old and they had lost their worth. Also I couldn't get 6 numbers into the ZBO box, so cut that down to 5.

Some SERIOUS weathering will be needed to hide all my mistakes, including one transfer on sideways.:banghead:

As promised, here are a few shots of the Grampus, quite pleased how this has turned out. I have a Heljan Dogfish on its way to me as well so will go nicely with this;

 Having flicked through a lot of photo's I noticed the uprights between the drop sides were often quite rusty so I painted those brown.

At the ends the top planks were picked out in grey to represent faded wood

New planks in the floor were also picked out and detritus added to the base.

It also looks good in an arty black and white shot;

The eagle eyed will have noticed that some point levers appeared mid photo shoot for the Grampus, these being from the Peter Clark range. While I had the Grampus out, I also gave 03382 an airing, this being the least photographed loco on the layout as it had been buried at the back of the cupboard.

Gramps looks excellent Rob, at least your Transfers went on right.:good:

Thanks Andy, they are a mix of Railtec and Peco, I sprayed the wagon with gloss black which helps adhesion then matt varnish.

I know Dave is booking for 2023 as my 7mm Bakewell Street  has been bumped from 2022 due to the 2021 cancellation....

As others have said, the Grampus has turned out well. Mine are ready for primer now, one will be a rusty black one and the other an early Dutch repaint.

They're such nice wagons that I'm tempted to have a couple more.

If we are talking Parkside Grampus, here’s my offering, as per the real wagon depicted, an unfitted wagon converted to fitted, hence no baskets, but all the brake rigging was scratch built with cast hangers and brake cylinder, copied from an upturned scrap grampus

Playtime tonight, Dave is bringing his wagons over and going to let him try the 08 as he thinking of buying one. Layout all set up;

Latest wagon purchase is this Dogfish which has been renumbered and weathered (a few bits left to do). Special thanks for @Trains4U for responding to my wanted ad and great service to get it to me.

Lovely stuff.  Remarkable how small the layout really is, I can't tell when looking at the pics.  Great to see what can be done in a small space.

I have had one or two operating sessions on my layout as it progresses.  Really satisfying and exhausting.

Interesting project. I've got two Grampus I want to convert to to vac fitted examples, I just can't seem to find a supplier who does the bits.

Could I please as who's parts you used for the vac cylinders and brake shoes?

Cheers,

Wayne

Some shots from tonight's session,  standard inglenook shunting puzzle, 3 sidings, 2 rakes of 4 wagons to be shunted into an order chosen at random. No more than 5 wagons per siding, no more than 2 wagons moved at a time

Thanks John, yes the scenic board is less than 5ft long which does bring its challenges  particularly as to what can be incorporated scenically but we had fun last night as despite the small space the track plan is operationally quite interesting.

Some more photos from last night, in addition to the 08 I also gave the class 37 a run. Dave and I agreed it needs properly running in, luckily he has access  to a large test track.

Since my switch to O gauge I have managed to convince Dave to have a go (albeit it didn't require much influence), he models an earlier period to me (early 60s) but some of his wagons are suitable for the layout at a stretch so he has numbered them differently on each side. This van is a work in progress Parkside kit.

One more shot of the class 37, an attempt at a going away shot which isn't particularly easy to pull off.

I do like a shunting puzzle  - makes life a little more interesting at shows as well...

Indeed Chris,  I have never tried it at shows, I did at one point end up with the van in front in front of 2 wagons I was trying to couple up and failed as I couldn't see behind the van, which created another level of challenge. I definitely need to practice using my 3 links more.

Mine is 21' long incl 5' sector plate.  I think, looking back, that I made the classic error of making provision for passenger traffic, albeit only 2 coach trains.  As I look at my layout, I'm thinking it may be too large and unwieldy to take to shows.

My original thought was to make the layout Eastern Region in about 1962.  However, I have two buddies that I suborned into 0 gauge.  One does WR 1955 and the other NBR 1920.  Not easy to find folk that are interested in British 0 gauge around here.

Rule 1 is going to needed in spades.

John
