Hi Steve,

On Ladmanlow and Cawdor I used Humbrol Matt Acrylic 113 (Rust) for the rail sides and chairs, and Humbrol Matt Acrylic 29 (Dark Earth) for the sleepers as a base, then used Humbrol 62 (Leather) for the brighter rust on some chairs, and a dilute wash of Humbrol RC401 (Dirty Black) to give the sleepers some definition.

Great photo Al. I will dig out the Humbrol paints, I've got a Lifecolour weathered wood set I'll try as well. Correct me if I'm wrong but you used ash for your groundwork, did you give that any washes at all?

For the groundwork I used a grey wood primer paint, and then brushed ash into it with my fingers whilst it was still tacky, so no painting as such, just the combination of the ash colour and grey primer as it mixed.

Been having a think about the scenery, there is just not  enough room for the embankment I wanted so I recon my options are;

299129608_Option1.jpg.f815ec74efe720bc8f27fcd873cfd28a.jpg

Road overbridge with the road on top of a retaining wall alongside the siding, but that is moving away from the greenery I wanted.

1750572291_Option2.jpg.2ebba483ddd73b766c659c4f4f0cfa64.jpg

Road overbridge through the middle of the layout and trees, hedges, bramble etc hiding the sector plate. I quite like this but I think the bridge will make the layout seem even smaller!

720015113_Option3.jpg.7299ca1817c9908bf35977b626eef5e2.jpg

Sky backscene with exit holes cut out, trees, hedges, bramble etc hiding the holes, quite like this but I wouldn't know what to put in the space between the tracks, A. It's no really big enough for any tall trees.

Time to do some mock ups I think!

Messed around with a couple of mock ups. I like the bridge but it doesn't leave much space the fiddle yard side and I cant think of anything to put in between the tracks in the first picture.

Keep trying!

Finally come up with something I quite like. I get my embankment , on the right, with a path on top of it leading up to a footbridge crossing the tracks.

Just got to try and find something like it to base it on and work out how to build it!

Finally got something I like and I think could work.

An embankment with a footbridge crossing the tracks to an embankment on the other side. I could also now fit in a loco shed but would this look ok and not too crowded? I think it will be ok and it disguises that end of the layout.

Just got to work out how to start building it all!

I like the engine shed. I think it's "necessary" to justify the kick-back, this will be difficult to shunt with wagons.

Could you miss out the footpath along the top of the embankment? You could have a fence here to suggest the path beyond, and then soften the angle of the embankment.

Or even arrange for a flight of steps from the footbridge descending between the tracks, towards the Y point at the front of the layout. This ought to help with blocking the view too.

I can imagine an ash pit in front of the engine shed and a small but substantial-looking water tower in front of the track here too.

That's a good idea!

I'd like to soften the embankment angle and the steps are a good idea too.  I was going to fit a coal stage and water   tank somewhere, I do have a Wills single track engine shed that I could use, that has a water tank on top so I might use that. An ash pit is a thought too although as it's a run down out of the way corner of an industrial line I thought any ash could just be dumped to the side. I'd have to make the shed a bit neglected too.

With putting an inspection pit in my shed too I think I’ve used all the sections that come in the Peco kit otherwise I’d have happily sent you the surplus sections for you to use

Thanks Chris, I do have some bits somewhere but it is code 100, I guess I could always glue the rails in but also it would mean taking up the track I've laid.  The shed is intended to be little used anyway with basic coal and water facilities maybe even the odd wagon repair taking place.

Had a little go at backscene painting, watched a youtube video for some ideas, I wanted a heavy overcast sky and see something like this out of my window! I actually quite like it for my first attempt and may well use it.

Thanks guys, I used emulsion test pots for the main bit, a very light grey, dark grey and light blue and just scrubbed them on and blended them together, the greens were craft acrylic paints.

Loving the way your ideas have developed to what looks like it’s going to be a cracking little layout. Following with interest.

A couple of questions if I may are you’re points operated by dowel with a spike up through the tie bar? How mad have you gone with dropper wires? All handy info for Meldon I’m building, thanks in advance.

 Cheers
