I've started building theses hut's, may or may not use them on this layout but it's all good practice. I'm after a different effect to the house and really find it hard to get convincing weathered brickwork. I'm going to try some of the recommendations I've had on here.  I've sprayed them with red oxide primer then a wash of mortar colour.

No they haven't yet Chris, mind you I haven't had any post at all since Wed and I'm waiting on a magazine that I ordered so I wonder if they're struggling. I'll let you know as soon as I get them. Those huts were freebies, I thought it would give me something to practice my brick work on.

Finally managed to finish the house, thanks Chris :) I'll just add some weathering powders another day.

I was thinking of going with a hedge behind.

You’re welcome although all I did was send you a set of spare downpipes, you’re the one who’s done a fantastic job

Had a bit of an experiment, I couldn't get near the backscene with the static grass tea strainer so I've used shorter fibres with a puffer bottle, I just wondered what people thought?

Tip the layout back far enough so the tea strainer is over the area to be grassed, drop the grass then use the hoover to straighten the blades ;)

Damn, I never thought of that!

I ended up trying longer fibres, 6mm in the puffer bottle followed by shorter 2mm fibres. There will be a hedge along the back so the will cover the gap.

I started work on the hedgerow that will run along the back, I also messed about with some pruning's from a plant I cut back. I like the idea of having a dead tree somewhere amongst it.

Settled on a place for my dead tree, on with the next bit now.

Recording little details like this looks trivial, even banal - but the difference makes or breaks the model. The visual balance is so important, it is so obvious when you are looking at the layout, and so hard to describe. Keep up the good work, I'm enjoying this thread a lot.

I built a fence, now got to bed it in with some static grass weeds, brambles etc. I could also do with adding some junk around the buffer stop and various other places.

Steve, I’ve been doing some catch up reading this morning, so have read through the last few pages of this thread in one go: as others have commented, this is excellent modelling, and with the techniques well explained and photographed too, thank you. What impresses most though when reading through I think is the consistent attention to realism and detail at every stage - a masterclass. Keith.

I've made a greenhouse! The plan is to place it like this, bed in the path and a veg patch and a few flowers either side of it.

Hi Steve

The greenhouse looks superb, surely its the real thing and you have somehow shrunk it to 1/76 scale.

With your ground working skills, this will be a wonderful addition.
