Not so much new Strathwood titles but a heads up that Eighties Spotting Days Out of the Ashes has now sold out.

These titles are also now critically low in stocks and are likely to sell out very soon too:

Eastern Steam Days Remembered

Sixties Spotting Days around the Western Region

Sixties Spotting Days around the Scottish Region

Seventies Spotting Days along the East Coast Main Line

Seventies Spotting Days along the West Coast Main Line

Looking back at English Electric Locomotives

Fifty Years of the Class 50s

We have extended our recent Special Offer buy five books and the lowest priced item will be free until 31 August to help all those self isolating and bargain hunters alike, the offer applies right across our range and through all of those in our now extended catalogue.

But be quick as we have now sold out on eighteen of the former Irwell Press clearance titles, we can see another dozen or more going out of print very soon in our warehouse as we create lots of space for new titles due to arrive very soon.

A recent run for an unknown reason on Western Steam Days Remembered has seen us now sell out of this title, we do not expect to do a reprint, instead I would rather see funds going into our new titles.

Eastern Steam Days Remembered is likely to follow suit very soon too.

Therefore if you are quick you can grab a copy for yourself either by telephone or online.

New titles in stock and available now:

A Celebration of LMS Coronation Pacifics

By John Jennison

The first in a series which has but a simple aim, that is to use top quality photographs reproduced at the largest possible size to celebrate some of the best-loved steam classes. Full-page shots are presented in a landscape format and are backed up by comprehensive captions.

What better place to start then than the Stanier Coronation Pacifics of the LMS? The emphasis throughout is on the engines in service and the book has been arranged in chapters in chronological order starting with the four main variations of the class as built, followed by the post-war de-streamlined engines.

The final three chapters show the Coronations at work in the 1950s and 1960s on each of the principal routes where they were used, ending with the final few months of 1964.

All engines in the class are covered at least once. The pictures have been selected from the collections of Rail-Online and Brian Stephenson’s Rail Archive Stephenson and include many taken by Jim Carter and Bill Anderson.

Jim was a railwayman based at Patricroft which gave him access to locations in the north west not available to other photographers.

Bill Anderson took some of the finest pictures ever taken in this country as the engines worked over Shap and Beattock.

Main Line to The South - Part 1: Basingstoke to St.Cross (Winchester)

The Southern Railway Route between BASINGSTOKE, WINCHESTER, EASTLEIGH and SOUTHAMPTON.

Part 1 Basingstoke to St. Cross

By John Nicholas and George Reeve

The London and Southampton Railway opened its line in 1840 and was the first major railway in the south of England. Engineer Joseph Locke, and contractor Thomas Brassey, completed the last part of the line from Basingstoke to Winchester through the chalk downs to the summit at Litchfield Tunnel.

The easy grades of the line were only achieved by involving some heavy civil engineering work, high embankments, deep cuttings and numerous tunnels. Traffic grew steadily, particularly goods, to and from the expanding Southampton Docks and boat trains ran in connection with the ocean liner traffic.

Southampton developed into the principal port for military traffic to the Empire and the line played a major role in the supply of men and materials for the Boer, First and Second World Wars. The line achieved something of a legendary status in the 1960s being the last steam worked main line in England until its electrification in July 1967.

Today the line between Basingstoke and Southampton carries not only heavy passenger traffic but, with the recent demise of coal traffic elsewhere, some of the nation’s heaviest freight traffic with containers from Southampton Docks.

Part One covers the line between Basingstoke and Winchester

Part Two Will deal with the line through Eastleigh, including the works, to Shawford Junction.

Part Three Will complete the story to Southampton covering St. Denys, Northam, Southampton Terminus and Central

Both ordered and according to the warehouse should be on their way today. Any news Kevin on whether the books below will still make it this year? Already been asked for possible Christmas presents...

But I should have Sixties Diesel & Electric Days Remembered VII, likewise Seventies Diesel & Electric Days Remembered III and Eighties Diesel & Electric Days Remembered out this year and maybe another Deltic title to go with a fresh Class 50 book.

Some titles have been pushed into next year which is already looking very full, this includes those titles mentioned back in February (when Covid just seemed to be a Chinese problem), this includes the Woodhead book.

As you have seen we have the new Deltic title just out now (it was delayed by a week due to the challenges of shipping half way across Europe now we are on the cusp of a full Brexit!)

Meanwhile, we should have several more titles in the Strathwood & Irwell ranges in time for Santa's sleigh for release in around four weeks time.

In the interim feast yourselves upon the new Southern Electric and Deltic titles.

Looks like I was lucky snapping up both Seventies Spotting Days along the East Coast Main Line and

Seventies Spotting Days along the West Coast Main line then--bought from Class Forty Preservation Society too so all for a worthy cause!

Both volumes are superb, icing on the cake of what for me is a great series of photographic albums from Kevin Derrick, of rail scenes from my youth, thanks for the memories.

Cheers,

Keith
