The record was achieved on 3 July 1938 on the slight downward grade of Stoke Bank south of Grantham on the ECML, and the highest speed was recorded at milepost 90¼, between Little Bytham and Essendine. It broke the 1936 German DRG Class 05 002's record of 124.5 mph.

Is this a revised edition of Hugh's "British Railways Steam Locomotive Allocations" (that was originally 528 pages), or is it a revised edition of Hugh's "BR Steam Locomotives - Complete Allocation History 1948-1968" which was originally 384 pages?

Or is it an amalgamation of both? 

Also, has there been any comprehensive revision/correction of the data?

 

Just a tad confused at the moment...

Well, I've just ordered said book. I THINK it's a revised edition of the second title I mentioned, rather than the first one mentioned in the piece above. So finger's crossed...

 

Might be only a 1,000 print run. Hope Hugh's sorted out some of the (slight) errors in the original tome.

 

I do feel it's important that publishers and booksellers give fuller details of their offerings, as there is often less opportunity to actually see the book before purchasing nowadays.

Well, said book just came through our letterbox. Managed to catch it as it came through the flap.

 

I can confirm that it's a "second revised and updated edition" of BR Steam Locomotives - Complete Allocations History 1948 -1968, rather than the other book mentioned. Exactly 400 pages (previous edition was 384 pp). The small number of illustrations are different from the 1st ed.

 

Interesting that the rrp of this edition is £5 cheaper than when the book first appeared in 2014.

I bought mine from Bill Hudson via Amazon and it is a revised issue. I get the impression from the preface that it has a fair few changes and additions.

After having had a look through the "revised" edition of Hugh's Loco Allocation book, I must express some disappointment. There are still the same typos from the 1st edition and some known errors haven't been corrected in the 2nd ed.

 

I'm beginning to wonder if there are any corrections at all... is this really just a reprint?

It's a good book.  Covers a lot of ground adequately.  I would have liked  a bit more depth. more maps, more photographs, more history, more of everything, etc, speaking as someone who is very interested in Manchester's railways, but this is very good single volume on the subject.  Well recommended.

Just to put this public spat in perspective there was only one email and a Facebook message which was left last night after the warehouse and offices had closed for the day, the issue was in hand already to make contact with our customer to sort the problem. I have personally spoken to Pinza55007 and left two emails in a speedy reply and I have also offered an additional FREE book to the value of £50 to resolve the problem, which I hope will be well received and go a long way to repair any disappointment expressed publicly.
