I note he hasn't replied to this one, probably busy getting Beijiao (Chinese H0) ready. The layout uses Digitrax for the DCC so assume it is their hand controllers.

I did quite a bit of design work with battery chargers for Nicd , Nimh and Li

if you want a sustained terminal voltage until discharge Li is the best and is available in 9V pp9 format , but quite expensive

memory effect is very minimal in nimh and virtually unobservable in li where it’s swamped by degradation due to parasitic action

but obviously you need to be able to recharge li

of course never in the course of normal operation should you deeply discharge Li of course. ( many have protection )

but on a cost performance basis surely retain your existing rechargeables with a few Alkaline's for backup

Digitrax has used 9v PP3-form batts in its throttles for more than 20 years. I find a freshly-charged Li batt will show 7.8 volts on the throttle display, and they work fine down to at least 7.4 volts.

A possible solution is to use the type of PP9 which recharge via a USB cable.

If the internal space in the throttle allows, keep the battery connected to the cable, cut a hole through the battery cover to allow the USB cable to pass and use an external power bank if needed. Keep the power banks charged behind the layout and plug in if required.

I have those as standby for the android tablets I use as handheld controllers.
