Guy Rixon
I've just drawn up an SECR "eros" ventilator, working from an HMRS facsimile of an SECR works drawing. It came out looking like this: The spigot at the bottom is for planting vents into model roofs and does not exist in the full-size vent. The drawing makes clear that the hood of the vent is hollow and the vertical cylinder is a 4-inch-bore pipe passing through the roof. The vent is basically a fancy chimney-cowl. I have no good photos of these things, so I don't know if this form is what was actually made, or how widely the SECR used this version. Does anybody know? In particular, I'd like to know if this form of vent was used by the SECR on coaches; I know it was used on goods vans. I have a feeling that the eros vents fitted by the SR to later coaches were an evolution of this form. I think the later vents had the same pattern of airflow but were visually distinct.
