Banford Yard - Oxfordshire ( dismantled )

A few bits done - but I’ve kinda over modelled in the covid lockdown leading to a malaise just as we enter the modelling season. I find I’m actually missing attending exhibitions , as I went to a few last year , something I hadn’t done much of since I was a kid.

painted the bridge to match the mitre bridge outside old oak common, I realised the layout was becoming “ 50 shades of grey “, The plank has some features in common with both didcot and old oak , I need to inject some life into it now - some character . Need some cameos etc.

we have the duff selection, awaiting their turn on the shelf . 47467, 315, 055 ( blue period awaiting work ) and another 745 awaiting renumber or to be sold on.

Working on the bridge surface ...
And deciding a new identity for my second REs 47...if I could be arsed I’d take the Jumpers off and make it a pre railnet one. Nameplates took some shifting as silver always does !

Dug out my 2 kit built warflats.

I’ m determined to finish them during this modelling season . Got some decals on - although there are not the whole set in the pack , the big yellow data panels were most important.

This kits are very basic and with the cavalex one coming , I can’t see me do anymore. In fact I had an eBay clear out of kits I had which because it takes me so many Months / years/ decades to get round to stuff I forgot about had come out RTR - turbot , clam, Rudd anyone ? I’m not in the business of building stuff that is now available off the shelf !

Good work there Rob.

I am always impressed with your recreation of the railway scene, where nothing much went on most of the time.

For me it is the capture of the ordinary, which is more important

cheers

. Not a massive amount to report

- late BR fleet expands with addition of RFD revised livery 47 , I’ve now got almost all the liveries I wanted for this period , I just need a 47 in railfreight grey ( respray in progress ) and a green one to become celebrity 47004.

fleet now consists of 47315/467/745/834/209/365, 37012/274/703 as well as 08839

attention has turned to the kickback sidings - boringly I’m going for a spoil / aggregates / coal unloading site as that covers both the BR period and EWS and I’ve already plenty of BR spoil wagons and MEAs for the later period.

hardstanding and ballast in progress, need to sort super low profile warehouse design for backscene as it’s very close to sidings - didn’t think that one out well.

finally, this siku 1/87 digger will need some work, hopefully to include a bucket grabber thingy ( available as 3D print ) to make it compatible with unloading opens. Don’t know if the liebherr 974 ever had this attachment , but it’s the closest I’m going to get - I’m surprised Kibri or suchlike don’t do one.

On the subject of panelling - the grey screen panels can be seen in the lower photo. The wedge-shaped bunker walls are hollow with only the ends of the end units covered over. The pillars behind are legs of a wind farm installation rig, being prepared in West Bay.

Interesting stuff Phil - it’s good to see newly rejuvenated railfreight facilities.

problem I have is it has to be ultra low relief By the bridge as the clearance is minimal - the kick back sidings were just a way of making it so that it wasn’t 5’ scenic and 5’ fiddle.

on the left side , I could do a concrete wall and on the right some slightly more proud warehousing .

As the model covers early 90s until about 2006, Ill probably make it A slightly older looking wall like the one below. Not sure I can get away with the generic “ shadow grey “ backscene behind that or if it’s best to paint it sky colour or even get a photographic sky jobbie.

Slow progress this week. Life keeps getting in the way !

installing some signage and barriers for the hardstanding.

I tried to make a site office out of an old knightwing 20’ container , but it didn’t pan out, so I’ll have to bite the bucket and buy one.

concrete retaining wall , modelled on the one at Banbury stone terminal. Crying out for some weathering and graffiti

I’ve wanted to have a go at some graffiti for a while. I ordered some micro brushes but TBH they were no finer than my humbrol jobbie.

Got a suitable wagon at didcot as a basis to copy - it’s a VAA not a VDA but I dont have any VAAS so , look away if easily offended !

need to try and weather roof a bit next, but that’ll be tricky to get that level of degradation .

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm not generally keen on graffiti, but you have done a great job there.

Back in the 1980s in Bristol TOPS we had a visit from Bristol British Transport Police who were investigating graffiti in the Swindon area, on the vans in the Swindon-Longbridge Rover circuit I think. As part of their evidence gathering we were able to provide details of when particular vans had been stabled at a particular location. If I recall rightly the artist had recorded his work, helping his own conviction.

cheers

Yeah, I’m not quite sure where I stand on it. It’s a nuisance , costing the railway , but I can appreciate the more artistic  side rather than some stupid tag sprayed on everything - that’s like an animal marking it’s territory !

Even on infrequent visits to London , the graffiti doesnt get anywhere near your average European city .
